RC BEHALA’S THREE-DISTRICT GOODWILL TRIP TO R.I.D 3010, 3070 AND 3080

Taking a train to Amritsar on the 22nd of March, 2010, Rtr George-secretary, RC Behala was just wondering that what this Rotaract movement has given to him. Many points popped up in his mind but for a guy who loves interacting with more and more people, the very thought of having friends all over the WORLD because of Rotaract made him feel overwhelmed and a sense of satisfaction and joy came across the mind. A journey alone without knowing many from the places of his destination, he was ecstatic about the fact that he was on a Rotaract visit to R.I.D 3070, 3080 and 3010 and it was A FIRST OF ITS KIND IN R.I.D 3291 and moreover RC Behala’s approach to interact with more rotary international districts has always been appreciated by others.
The first destination was Amritsar, R.I.D 3070 on the 24th of March and the DRR –Rtr Amit was well known to Rtr George. Rtr Amit , due to personal work pressure could not meet George and also because he was from a place far from Amritsar. So in the DRR’s physical absence, there was the DRR (E) Rtr Rajinder Singh from RC Jandiala, who met George and also took him around Amritsar as this was Rtr George’s first trip to the place and the district. Taking George in his own car, Rajinder took him to WAGAH border at a time when retreat by both India and Pakistan was being held. It was sight of joy and enthusiasm and straight back from there was in the hotel room in a Gurdwara which Rajinder had arranged despite the rush. Here was when Rtr George presented him with our club bulletin (installation issue) and a copy of the District directory. Rajinder also guided George to the Jalianwalabagh and the famous Golden temple. But during this whole travelling, Rajinder did not forget to treat George with the famous lassi from the ‘LassiWala’ from HAAL bazaar and also the famous stuffed Kulcha of Amritsar. He also arranged tickets for George for his next destination- Dehradun and at around 10:30 pm at night it was time to leave for Dehradun but not before thanking DRR and the DRR (E) and also hoping to meet them soon in Kolkata.

25th and 26th was the time that George enjoyed the beautiful places of Dehradun and Mussorie, but sadly enough Rotaract clubs in these parts were not active enough to turn up. So getting in touch with the DRR-Rtr Satinder Singh it was Rtr Vijay Arora- the District advisor who guided George all along Mussorie and Dehradun. But interaction over the phone was not for which Rtr George was there and so in the afternoon f the 26th he took a bus to Roorkee where Rtr Vijay met him along with Rotaractors from RC Roorkee, RC STIBS and RC Gangoh. It was indeed great to meet three clubs from the district-R.I.D 3080 and the rotaract hospitality was again of high class as like Amritsar and the Rotaractors hosted George for a dinner with them but not before taking him for a ride on their motorcycles to “Pratanjali”- Baba Ramdev’s headquarters in Haridwar and also IIT- Roorkee. Rtr George presented them with copies of our District Directories and our official club bulletin. Rtr Vijay presented George with a DRR’s theme badge and letterheads from RC Gangoh.
After yet another great day of Rotaracting along with travelling, it was time to take a night bus to the last Destination-DELHI. Rtr George stayed in Delhi on the 27th and 28th of this month and had great time going around our capital city, and, DRR, R.I.D 3010- Rtr Niharika was supportive in guiding him, though not physically present. It was on the 28th March that the international service director of the district Rotaract council- Rtr Vir Phillip hosted George at the Delhi Golf club for a lunch together. Rtr George presented Vir with our official club bulletin and a copy of our District directory after lunch. It was great to interact with Vir as he turned out to be a great guy with loads of innovation and new ideas. After more then 2 hours of interaction and sharing of thoughts, they parted ways but again with a promise to meet soon.

It was a great trip coming to an end when Rtr George boarded the train on 29th morning to head back to Kolkata with experience to cherish and share with Rotaractors back home. Though the trip was very hectic and tiring, yet the urge to meet and make friends kept George going as always and at the end of the trip, it was nothing but satisfaction and sense of joy that prevailed over RC Behala yet again.
A special thanks to all the Rotaract clubs who made an effort to meet Rtr George and to all the DRR’s- Rtr Amit, Rtr Satinder and Rtr Niharika, DRR (E) R.I.D 3070- Rtr Rajinder, Rtr Vijay-District advisor, R.I.D 3080 and Rtr Vir-international service director-R.I.D 3010 for their help during the trip. Clothes distribution on World Rotaract Day

On 13th March, 2010 Rotaract Club of Behala and parent Rotary- Rotary club of Behala observed World Rotaract Day by distributing new clothes to the less privileged students of Janakalyan Bastuhara School in Janakalyan, Behala.
It was a very touching event as the joy on the students of the school was worth a watch. They were overwhelmed to receive new clothes and thanked us a lot. So did the teachers of the school who appreciated our constant good work for the school.
Around 11am we reached the school where we distributed the clothes, starting from the younger students moving on to the older ones. T-shirts and 3-quarters were for the guys and skirts were there for the girls. The age ranged from 4 years to 13 years and all were more than happy to turn up on a Saturday morning. It didn’t take much of a time for us to distribute after which we quizzed the students on their general knowledge and English language and wished them all the best for their future and assured our visit on regular visit with whatever we can from our end.
A special thanks to Rotary club of Behala on supporting us like always and making yet another joint project this year a great success.

Rotaract Presentation

On 11th, March, 2010, Rotaract club of Behala gave a “ROTARACT PRESENTATION” to Rotary club of Amtala & Rotary club of Garden Reach (Rotary clubs which does not sponsor a rotaract club)at Birla Planetarium from 7:00pm onwards.
The presentation was conducted by our Secretary Rtr George. The presentation slides consisted of few informative, data based, figure and projects of rotaract. He also gave a small introduction of our club and how we function along with our Parent Rotary. The presentation was a part of Rotaract club of Behala’s “WORLD ROTARACT WEEK CELEBRATIONS”. Few would be Rotaractors were also present during the presentation.
Rotaract is a service club for young professionals and students ages 18-30. Sponsored by local Rotary clubs, Rotaract clubs provide young people with opportunities to foster leadership and responsible citizenship, and to promote international peace and understanding.
Rotaract is one of Rotary International’s structured programs designed to help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process.
Rotaractors and Rotarians are partners in service. Rotarians advise promising students and young professionals, the members of Rotaract clubs. Rotaractors bring new energy to a Rotary club, inspire fresh ideas for service, increase support of projects, and help develop future Rotarians.
Every year, Rotaractors and Rotarians celebrate the charter of the first Rotaract club which was chartered in 13 March, 1968 at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, in the USA. During the week of 13 March, together they participate in a variety of activities to increase Rotaract awareness in their communities.
Rotaract clubs give young adults the opportunity to serve community needs within an international framework of fun and service. Rotaract is one of the most significant and fastest growing programs of Rotary service.
So as an active and vibrant rotaract club we organized such a presentation to rotary clubs which does not sponsor a rotaract club. Last but not the least our parent rotary club’s help towards this project was immense. All the Rotarians present of Behala, Amtala and Garden Reach was very happy and satisfied after the presentation. All wished us good luck and happy rotaracting.

fellowship on International women's day

On 7th, March, 2010 Rotaract Club of Behala organized a felicitation ceremony for the female members of the club to mark International Women’s Day (8th march) at Rtr. Ananya's house. The event was followed by a club fellowship lunch.
The event was mainly organized by us to recognize and encourage the female members who have worked extremely hard to uphold the clubs traditions. We were happy to do such an event which will encourage the other members to work actively in organizing different events.
International women’s day has significance in our history; the first International Women’s Day was in 1911. The very first International Women's Day was launched by Clara Zetkin on 19 March (not 8 March). The date was chosen because on 19 March in the year of the 1848 revolution, the Prussian king recognized for the first time the strength of the armed people and gave way before the threat of a proletarian uprising. Among the many promises he made, which he later failed to keep, was the introduction of votes for women. Success of the first International Women's Day in 1911 exceeded all expectation. This was followed by meetings which were organized everywhere in small towns and even the villages halls were packed so full that male workers were asked to give up their places for women. Men stayed at home with their children for a change, and their wives, the captive housewives, went to meetings. Clara Zetkin also proposed that every year in every country there should be one same day when women's solidarity presses for equality women continue to face inequity on many fronts.Finally in 1913 International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Women's Day ever since. During International Women's Year in 1975, IWD was given official recognition by the United Nations and was taken up by many governments. International Women's Day is marked by a national holiday in many countries. International Women's Day may be a day of global celebration but there is no room for complacency and still they are tortured and deprived. So keeping in mind the significance we Rotaractors of Behala felicitate the women’s of our club to show and recognize their contribution and make them feel special.
The felicitation was then followed by a fellowship lunch. The female members were overwhelmed and thanked us for our gesture. This is a continuous program of our club and we in due course of time shall take up these kinds of event to show our responsibility and dedication towards the society.

Twin club celebration of Valentine’s Day with the loved ones

Twin clubs Rotaract Club of Behala and Rotaract Club of Calcutta Lansdowne celebrated valentines Day on the 14th of February, 2010 at Santi Niwas-an old age home and spent some quality time with the inmates.
To start of with, the twin clubs presented all the inmates with Red roses which was followed by the cutting of a violin shaped cake. The surprise was though that the cutting of this cake was done by the “Oldie couple” at the home, which was applauded by the other inmates. Munching on the chips, dhoklas and the sweets, the grandparents could not stop blessing us for this wonderful time we had dedicated only for them. Though a test match at Eden was underway and so was the enjoyment of the youths celebrating Valentines Day, the twin clubs were more then happy to bring a smile to the anxious faces of our grandparents at the home.
Not to miss was the inmate’s favourite thing- taking snaps with us and when love was in the air the snaps were only to be romantic ones. Through our time the only thing we did was to enjoy ourselves- but not to forget that our treat from the inmates- chips and sweets which we all liked a lot.
As like always we had a gala time interacting and having fun with our so very loved ones at Santi Niwas, with RC Behala completing its 50th Project this Rota-year (2009-10) and yet another successful project from the twin clubs with 9 members turning in from RCC Lansdowne to RC Behala’s 5. Assistant District Secretary (avenues)- Rtr Rahul Banerjee also joined us in our celebration of Valentines day

AIRTEL DIGITAL TV FOR SANTI NIWAS

Rotaract Club of Behala along with parent Rotary- Rotary club of Behala provided digital cable connection to Santi Niwas. The initial checking and paying of advance and finalizing of all the things was done on the 13th of Feb ,2010 resulting in the final installation of Airtel Digital TV at Santi Niwas on Sunday - 14th of Feb,2010.
The handing over of the Set-top box was done by the members of Rotaract Club of Behala to the inmates and it could only generate a sense of joy and satisfaction among the members of Rotary and Rotaract Behala. ADS Rtr Rahul Banerjee was also present on the occasion to be a part of Rotaract Club of Behala’s one of the most satisfying project of the year. Though a good amount of cost was involved for this project, yet the sense of satisfaction never stopped Rotary Behala family to miss on this opportunity to be a reason for the so very innocent smiles on the faces of the inmates of Santi Niwas. It is needless to mention how overwhelmed they were to receive this gift from us as it was a long time concern for them on missing out on the current affairs along with their favorite serials, soaps and games for so long now.
This would be a continuous project for Rotaract Club of Behala as the recurring charges (monthly subscription to renewals) would all be borne by us. A pre valentines day gift with the installation being on the Valentines Day was a gift very precious to the inmates as they expressed their joy and happiness to us and blessed us with all their heart. This was yet another successful event with the joint initiative of Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of Behala.

Emergency lamps for the Grandparents

On 6th February,2010, Rotaract Club of Behala along with the newest member of Rotary Behala family-Interact Club of DAV Public school visited the very familiar Santi Niwas and gifted the grandparents with two emergency lamps.
The event started from around 10am when the Interactors along with the Rotaractors stepped inside Santi Niwas to once again bring the so very familiar smile on the faces of the Grandparents, who very eagerly wait for our visit to them. This year Rotaract Behala has been taking extra responsibility for the welfare of this so very sweet Old age home at Oxford Mission and this time going as per their needs, we decided to gift them with two emergency lamps. But the different aspect of this event was that the initiative came in from the Interactors first which we together implemented.
We also had taken their favourite strawberry cake- this times two-one for the granddads and one for the grand moms. They cut the cake with equal enthusiasm and did share it with us. We did chat with our dear grandparents for long before taking their kind permission to leave but again with the very same promise to visit them soon and this time with a big surprise.
We spend around 4 hours with them and in all the event emerged as a very successful one, bringing in smiles to the their faces.

ROTARACTORS ON A DAY-OUT TO PANCHLA

On a Sunday morning when winter’s busy welcoming spring, a stream of refreshed young minds splashed out their emotions of camaraderie amidst the landscapes of ‘Country Roads’, 30km from the heart of Kolkata.
We packed our bags for a day-outing to Panchla today. A few fifty uncomplicated minds in the mood of fun and frolic reached the venue around half-past ten. Luchi and sabzi welcomed us to a setting quite unforgettable. A bungalow with lush green lawns on both sides, precisely bordered with sprightly chrysanthemums, a kitchen garden at the backyard, a clear blue sky and a soothing winter sun – it seemed the décor was perfect for a day worth to be etched in the memories.
The lighter moments of life are the rarest to experience. Refuting the statement would be the unending enjoyable activities that time crafted for us today: from playing soccer to identifying the dumb charades, from the lazy strolls on the country-side lanes to the odd experience of playing kho-kho, and from the continuous cracking of jokes to the lengthy just-like-that chat sessions.
When we finished with the day-out we had a stomach-full of chowmein, fried rice, chilli-chiken, paneer, vegetable manchurian, gurer-rasgolla, a heart-full of satisfaction and a winter sun creeping down the horizon. As our bus sped down the National Highway towards the city, the realization of ‘life with friends’ was written all over our faces with the alphabets of smile. It was a day well-spent, with friends, whom we were all introduced to by the Rotaract Movement.
The script of today’s events has a very special place for our dear friend Rtr Sreyoshi, who provided us with the picturesque venue at Panchla ‘Country Roads’. The refreshed minds together thank her for the friendly gesture.

GRAND CLUB FELLOWSHIP AND DINNER

On 30th, January, 2010, Rotaract club of Behala organized a grand club fellowship followed by a sumptuous dinner from 5:00pm onwards. The venue was Rtr Aditi’s Basdroni home, which from 5:00pm onwards became the temporary gathering of Team Behala Rotaractors.
Team Behala organizes fellowship not only to fun around but to maintain and strengthen the friendship and bonding of its members. It becomes a common room for all topics, discussions and learning for few. The fellowship in our club is always filled with fun and enjoyment, as according to one of the members “we are the youth brigade and always restless and hungry for more”.
Started off with trade marked game”UNO”, while munching some snacks and ended with the lavish dinner. On our behalf we presented Rtr Aditi’s mother with a token of love from our end. The whole fellowship was well co-ordinated and Rtr Aditi played a perfect host. The dinner comprised of a total vegetarian menu, palak paneer, raita, paratha, polou, achar, chutney, papad, Aloo Gobi, sabji, sweets, salad, kheer (payesh). We had a wonderful and stomach full of delicious items.
Finally we bid goodbye to our club members and thanked the host. We parted towards our destined homes. Good Knight.

2ND CLUB ASSEMBLY AND CLUB MEETING ALL THE WAY…

On 24th, January, 2010, Rotaract club of Behala organized their 2nd Club Assembly at Calcutta Blind School from 5:00pm onwards. The assembly had a compact gathering which included Rotarians, Inner wheelers, Rotaractors, Rotaract Council members and guests.
Our club president and secretary greeted all the guests and kick started the assembly. Club secretary informed that Rotaract club of Behala (09-10) has taken a lead from rotaract club of Behala (08-09) in every field of activity.
As always we were privileged to have Rtn Deepnath Roy Chowdhury, President, Rotary Club of Behala at the meeting. With a brief discussion over the past projects and few future events, Rtn Deepnath uncle encouraged us for more quality projects. His encouraging words were marvelous and full of passion towards the movement. He also told us to keep up the good work because we ourselves have set a high standard for us to follow. PP Rtn Dedabrata Joardar, Rotary Club of Behala was welcome to the Dias. We are very fortunate enough to have him because 17(seventeen) years ago when Rotaract club of Behala was been chartered he was the then president of Rotary club of Behala and his son was a charter member and director. He enlightened us about different rotary projects and how can we become a part of it. His speech covered all the different aspects of Rotary-Rotaract relationship. We spoke about Rotaract news in GML. Rotarians gave us an idea of publishing a DRR’s monthly letter in consultation with all the clubs and council members. We informed that our district website is a very vibrant one and a good source of information gathering. We also thanked and praised our parent Rotary for being the perfect parent we could ever dream of.
Rtr Vishal Pandey, District Secretary (Rotaract District Council), gave a wonderful speech about the functioning of our club and encouraged us to do a lot of good work for the society. On our part we are also thankful to him in everyway he helped us from the very beginning and we pledged that our relationship will stay strong forever. Rtr Shankar Narayan Saha, District Advisor (Rotaract District Council), was our next and energetic speaker. His words were as kind and encouraging as always. He discussed with us different projects and praised us for our work and “ALL THE BEST”- his everlasting boosting words for us.
Our last speaker was Dr Sudipta Chakraborty, President, Inner wheel Club of Behala. She was all praised for us and wished us luck. We discussed about our much awaited project “REDCELL” with others in the assembly and gave a brief account on how it will work. Our president made his announcements and updated members about upcoming projects. The 2nd Club Assembly and club meeting were terminated. Snacks and cold drinks were served to all the persons present. Last but not the least we felt the absence of Rtn (Dr). Siddhartha Chakraborty, who was outstation. Our DRR Rtr Ayesha Alam was hooked up with some last minute important work so could not turn up.

GREETINGS TO SOLDIERS ON ARMY DAY

On 15th January, 2010, Rotaract club of Behala sent greetings to our brave soldiers to mark “Army Day”.
We handed over a letter and card to Lt.Col.Pandey, Divisional Head 90 Battalion Infantry. The handing over program happened at Fort William. Lt.Col.Pandey assured us that the letter and the card would reach the soldiers posted at LOC, Kaksar, Jammu and Kashmir and also appreciated our effort and thoughtfulness.
He gave a brief introduction of his battalion and the significance of “ARMY DAY”. We in return thanked him for his generous gesture in letting us thinking about the persons who are risking their lives just to keep us safe and happy.
The whole place was a restricted area and we were under camera surveillance, so photography was strictly prohibited. We will have the memory intact irrespective of no photos.

SHAWL DISTRIBUTION TO MARK WORLD YOUTH DAY

On 15th, January, 2010, Rotaract club of Behala distributed shawls to the farmers of Nalgora to mark “World Youth Day” from 11:00am onwards.
We assembled at Ballygunge Station at around 7:30am to catch a train to Mathurapur. Reached Mathurapur in time and took an auto to Joynal, then by cycle van 5 minutes to our final destination Nalgora. A representative of the RCC was there at the station to attend us. The cycle van was driven by them. We were welcomed with warm hands to RCC NALGORA. We were served with tea and snacks.
The farmers were already waiting for us to distribute the shawls. Rtr George gave a small speech on why we are here and the significance and vision of Rotaract Club of Behala towards such an act by our club on a preferred day with a niche. The whole body of the RCC was present and gave a small introduction because we were not visitors but a family. It was 11:30am and we started the distribution. The co-coordinator softly called out the names from her list. We one by one gave the shawls to them. The shawl receivers were mainly farmers which included male to female to handicapped persons.
15th January was a special day for the Hindu pilgrims for bathing in the Ganges, so few were unable to receive the shawls. But we handed over the extra shawls to the secretary of the RCC. In total we distributed 20 shawls. Finally the program was over and we spoke to the in charge persons on how can we help them better; we discussed few more plans and programs for the future. This visit to Nalgora will be counted among the many visits to this place earlier. We left by 3:00pm and reached Kolkata by 5:00pm.
All the persons present thanked us and wished us so that we can carry our good work for our society under the proud banner of “ROTARACT CLUB OF BEHALA”.

CHUMUKEDIMA (RID 3240) VISITS KOLKATA (RID 3240)

On 10th, January, 2010, Rotaract club of Behala hosted Rotaract club of Chumukedima of RID 3240 in Kolkata.
Rtr Shuvranshu coordinated with the members of Chumukedima and directed them into the city from Howrah to Sealdah. He meets them at Sealdah and arranged a hotel for them near the sealdah station. The Rotaractors freshened up at the hotel and took lunch. We gave them many choices of side seeing and places of interest in Kolkata, the common answer were Kalighat temple. So we made our way towards the central metro station to catch a train to Kalighat. On our way we pointed out the Presidency College, College Square and Calcutta University and took a shortcut from Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. They were excited to get inside the metro station except for few who have previously visited the city in the past. We reached Kalighat Kali Temple and gave puja. They purchased many pictures of Kali and other goddesses from the market near the temple.
Our next destination was Victoria memorial by majority. Again we went to the metro station and reached Maidan. With a little stole through the footpaths we reached the Memorial. But there was a huge queue at the ticket counter for entrance. We were also supposed to reach Park Circus by 5:00pm where we organized a getogether with the IDYEP Team with the Rotaractors of our district. So we came to a collective conclusion that we will take pictures fro outside and leave for the getogether venue. We were really feeling said for them but moved on as they were also making their way for the next destination. We walked down a few crossings and finally reached Rabindra Sadan Crossing after watching Birla Planetarium and Rotary Sadan. We reached Malu Motors in time to see others waiting for us. They distributed club book mark to all the Rotaractors present. They also gave a brief account of their district conference and were very happy. We had snacks and proceeded with the getogether. We exchanged letter head, bulletin, and badges and presented them with a memento as a token of love and fellowship. Rtr Soummojit escorted them to their hotel and bided a warm goodbye to them and promised them to catch up as soon as possible. They were very happy and excited to visit again, because last time we hosted them when they came to Kolkata.
We wished them good night and wished them safe journey back in the very next day in the morning train in which they were leaving for their home from Sealdah station, i.e., Chumukedima in Nagaland.

NEW YEAR’S GIFT TO AN ORPHANAGE FROM INTRA-DISTRICT TWINS

On 10th, January, 2010, Rotaract Club of Behala and Rotaract Club of Calcutta Lansdowne, the intra-district twins distributed stationary’s to an orphanage at lake gardens from 11am onwards through a joint project.
The two clubs came face to face for the first time in this New Year for a good cause by distributing 200 excise copies, pencils, erasers and sharpeners.
Both the clubs meet at a designated place and migrated towards the orphanage. After reaching the residential orphanage Mr. Chandan Das, co-coordinator welcomed us with New Year greetings. We were escorted and were served with tea. We then handed over the stationeries’ to him. He took us to a little tour of the orphanage and provided us with detailed information about the working and functioning of the home. The inmates were introduced to us and we interacted with them.
The inmates ranged from a 4year old to a 20 year old. The schooling is also provided by the orphanage with professional teacher’s educating the children. The home also provides computer and other extracurricular activities and program for the inmates. The school has different buildings for boys and girls, the different floors are divided according to age. A fully equipped gym is also their for the inmates. We befriended many and enjoyed a splendid sunny winter morning playing cricket and basketball with them inside the campus. We were surprised to see such good talents at the orphanage. There was a well constructed Basketball court inside the campus and students play pretty well and were above our expectations. It was real fun and everyone enjoyed at their fullest.
We really liked the way they are taking care for the unfortunate’s in the society and nurturing them and assisting them in setting goals and a good future for themselves. The coordinator thanked us all the way for our gratitude and compassion towards the society, to make it a better place to – play, learn, enjoy and live.

TEAM BEHALA HOSTED IDYEP TEAM FROM RID 3131& RID 3132.

On 10th, January, 2010 Rotaract club of Behala hosted the IDYEP team from RID 3131 and RID 3132.
We hosted the team in Kolkata and Rtr George coordinated with them in every possible way. We took them for brief Kolkata tour; we visited the Famous Kalighat Kali Temple. Rtr George helped them with their train tickets at Howrah station. Rtr George and Rtr Shuvranshu were instrumental in coordinating with the team and inviting them to our district on 7th, January, 2010, were they meet at the District conference cum Assembly of RID 3240 at Ranigunj.
We organized a getogether with them at Malu motors from 5:30pm onwards. We also provided them with snacks at the meeting venue. The meeting was organized for them to promote “ROTASIA 2009-10”, to be organized by RID 3132 at Aurangabad from 28th to 31st January, 2010.
Rtr George, secretary, RC Behala presented them with a memento as a token of love and our club bulletin. We finally bid them farewell and promised them to meet at Rotasia. The team was very happy and charmed in witnessing such a warm welcome, which they got from us in their short and brief visit to Kolkata

On 7th, January, 2010, Rotaract club of Behala attended the 20th District Conference cum Assembly of R.I.D 3240, hosted by RC GTR Ranigunj from 7-9th January, 2010 at Ranigunj.
Rtr George, Secretary and Rtr Shuvranshu, Director, of Rotaract club of Behala went to Ranigunj to attend the event. They were welcomed by the DRR Rtr Vijay Sharma, IPDRR Rtr Saurav Bajoria, and Conference Chair Rtr Ranjit Singh.
Conference Secretary Rtr Anil lead us to our room were we shared the room with few members of RC Kalimpong. After we registered for the event we were escorted to the dinning room for breakfast. We got a warm welcome from different clubs of RID 3240 and the IDYEP Team from RID 3132 and RID 3131. The conference of that district is different from ours, because they conduct the assembly for the next year at the same time and venue. The first day, opening session was the District assembly; the respected dignitaries gave their valuable speeches. DRR (E) Rtr Diptendu Mustafee unveiled his theme “Together We Serve” at the same. The assemblies then preceded to the next level were the Rotaractors took different rooms for their trainings. We in the mean time took a glance at the banner and photography competition going on between different clubs.
The different club officers training was over and we all headed for the food court were the lunch was being served. After lunch we took a brief rest and made ourselves ready for the inauguration of the 20th District Conference Cum Assembly “SHAKTI- the power of rotaract”. The ceremony was very good and everyone presented us with a different view and knowledge. The official souvenir for the event was unveiled.
The program next on the line was club presentation, were the clubs present gave their club introduction with a difference, this was followed by Quiz. In between evening snacks were being served. After the presentation dinner was being served. Quiz ended with RC Ukhra winning from the front. We were also felicitated by the President’s of RC Kalimpong and RC Gangtok in the presence of other conference officials on behalf of the whole district. Dinner was over when DJ VIRUS rocked us with a packed dance floor and rocking beats.
The only day of us at the event was a fun filled one, but there was one question which everyone asked us heading from the DRR to different club members that- “why are we leaving the event on the next day?” we also felt very sad while bidding a goodbye to the Rotaractors of RID 3240.
We took the morning train to Howrah and reached RID 3291 in the afternoon. Because of professional reasons we couldn’t stay there for the next two days

CHRISTMAS EVE CELEBRATION AT SANTI NIWAS

Rotaract club of Behala along with the participation of Interact Club of DAV Public School celebrated the Christmas-eve with cakes and cold-drinks, with the grandparents at Santi Niwas.
We stayed at Santi Niwas for more than 3 hours interacting with the grandparents starting from 11am, between which we enjoyed ourselves a lot, with the grandparents cutting the cake and enjoying the cold-drinks on a relatively chilly morning. To enhance their joy of having us among them was, when our club president Rtr Soummojit started singing romantic Bengali and Hindi numbers dedicating all to the grandparents, which was followed by a fabulous dance performance by Rtr Aditi and the inimitable recitation from Tagore by vice-president Rtr Mousumi. In all a great way to start Christmas was what very obvious for us as was for the grandparents who wanted to meet us again before the New Year.
We bid them a warm good-bye only with a promise as always to visit them as soon as possible.
This was also the first project for the Interact Club of DAV Public school after their official charter ceremony on the 12th of Dec, 09 and they enjoyed thoroughly, though they could not stay for long due to the scheduling of the project during their school hours.

TRIP TO R.I.D 3260 (BHUBANESWAR AND CUTTACK)

Rotaract club of Behala made a small Rotaract goodwill visit to R.I.D 3260 in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack from 20th to 22nd December, 09. President Rtr Soummojit and Secretary Rtr George representing the club started for the brief trip contacting the DRR of the R.I.D 3260 Rtr Sriniwasan Prusty on the 20th of Dec, 09 from Kolkata taking a direct bus to Bhubaneswar-the capital city of Orissa.
Reaching Bhubaneswar the next day morning at around 6:30 am, the first thing done was to contact the DRR again taking whose direction and guidance; we first visited the famous Lingaraj Temple and then the historic Dhauli Giri, beside where the famous battle of Kalinga had taken place after which the great transformation in King Asoka had taken place. Visiting the two famous spots of the place now was the time to get onto the purpose of our visit- Rotaracting.
From the help of the DRR again we contacted the ZRR of the zone Rtr Shubhalagna Das- who was to meet us at Cuttack along with the President of Rotaract Club of Cuttack Silver City. So it was time for us to make a move to Cuttack which we did after having some snacks in the capital city. Reaching Cuttack-which was only 27 kms away from Bhubaneswar, we had to wait in the bus stop for the Rotaractors. It was within few minutes that we were being hosted by the ZRR and President of Rotaract Club of Cuttack silver city- Rtr Afsar Ahmed Khan in a restaurant. Having chats and snacks, is where we interacted a lot exchanging cultures-emphasizing on the pros and cons of our each others cultures with a positive attitude and not to forget discuss a lot of stuffs happening in rotaract from the two districts. It was a healthy conversation which went on for about two hours after which we presented them with a token of love and our official club bulletin-Santoor. They also presented us with their district directory- Disha for this Rota-year. We then bid farewell to each other and we headed back towards Bhubaneswar- but only with assurances to meet again in the near future. After an enjoyable but hectic trip we were again back seated in a bus by 6pm to come back to Kolkata.
The DRR needs a special mention because of his immense help over the phone and he along with the ZRR, also invited us to their District Rotaract Conference to be held on the 9th and 10th January, 2010 at Gopalpur-on-sea.

Rotaract club of Behala visited Kalimpong and Siliguri, R.I.D 3240 from 16-20 Dec,09. RC Behala was represented by Rtr George (secretary-2009-10) and he met the Rotaract as well as Rotary Club of Kalimpong. He was invited to the weekly meeting of Rotary club of Kalimpong where he was also presented with a club banner by the Rotary club and he presented the Rotary club with a token of love from RC Behala and a copy of our club bulletin-Santoor. He also met the Principal aide to the DRR of R.I.D 3240 Rtr Ankit Agarwal at Siliguri. Rtr George also presented him with a token of love from us and a copy of our club bulletin-Santoor.

Pot Luck with Rotaract Club of Calcutta South West

On 13th, December, 2009, Rotaract Club of Behala and Rotaract Club of Calcutta South West jointly organized a “Pot Luck & Fellowship” at Rtr Sreyoshi’s home at Panchla from 1:00pm onwards.
We assembled at Rtr Sreyoshi’s home in Vivekananda Park by 12:30pm along with the cooked food which we have brought from our homes. At around 12:45pm we left for our fellowship destination. “POT LUCK” means a getogether were all the persons brings in food cooked or beverages for all. Everyone’s food is then opened and shared among all the persons; it is like a “feast”.
We took the national highway and headed towards Bauria, few members followed us in a bike. We reached as scheduled and helped ourselves to stretch and enjoy the cool and fresh winter. After side seeing the entire house we sat down to play cards and did a low profile photo shoot. The food was our next destination which we all decided to have in the garden underneath the winter sun.
Our menu represented many cuisines, it went from Fried Rice to Rosogolla, from Chilli Chicken to Egg Curry, from Aloo Dam to Chilli Mushroom and finally Rosso Mallai to Cold Drinks, the menu card had everything and the courtesy goes to all the members of both the club who took the liability in preparing such a wide variety of mouth watering food.
It was fun and we all enjoyed the whole lunch time which included the delicious food, punches, and many more. We thank Rtr Sreyoshi for letting her house be our fellowship destination with a difference. At round 3:30pm after having a side seeing of the area we decided to bid farewell to Panchla and head our way to Kolkata. It was indeed a worth for all the members who joined us in this fellowship.

Cloth Distribution at Calcutta Blind school

On 13th, December, 2009, Rotaract Club of Behala donated cloth to the Vocational Training Centre of Calcutta blind School from 11:00am onwards.
The members of Team Behala went to Calcutta Blind School at Behala Chowrasta to donate cloth to the vocational center. The cloth was handed over to the Mr. Shayamal Mondal, Principal, Calcutta Blind school and the Teacher-in-Charge of the centre. The cloth was given to the students to make clothes which they use and sell outside. The cloth was a 24 meter long piece. The Principal thanked us all the way for our show of responsibility to the blind students. The teacher-in-charge showed us all the different sections for the vocational training centre and we interacted with the students who are involved with such kind of work.
We were very happy and full of satisfaction after such a donation. The concerned persons wished us, so that we can keep our good work for the betterment of the society.

Blood Donation Camp

On 6th, December, 2009, Rotaract Club of Behala organized a “BLOOD DONATION CAMP” in association with Health Point (Blood Bank) and Golden Athletic club at Barisha from 10:00am onwards.
The blood donation camp began from 10:00am with members from the local club donating blood along with other donors from the locality. Among our club members Rtr George and Rtr Shubhrokamal donated blood. Overall there were 32 people who donated blood. We gave food to all the persons who donated blood, which contained eggs, bananas, cakes, milk, breads, sweets and glucose which is the most important among all. The entire camp was well organized and the local club members took an active part. The members of the blood bank i.e., Health Point were very happy in seeing us organizing such a camp in the winter. They also have been with us for many years from now as a blood bank in our blood donation camps in the past. So yet another successful blood donation camp came to an end at 2:00pm. The members of the blood bank were given food packets. The event was also attended by Rtr Pasupati, Rtr Prem and another Rotaractor from RC Joka.

ROTARACT FOR AIDS

On 1st December, 2009, 16(sixteen) Rotaract clubs came together to mark “WORLD AIDS DAY” by organizing a cycle rally and public gathering at Budge budge from 10:30am. To publicize the event Rotaractors made banners, the red ribbons, flags and posters with the AIDS symbol. An auto bearing our banner went on announcing our program from 7:00am in the morning along the budge budge trunk road and nearby localities.
The total program was segregated into two halves; first half was the “PUBLIC GATHERING” which took place in Bata More from 10:30am onwards. The “RED RIBBON” was given to all the Rotaractors, Guests, Rotarians, Speakers and everyone present. The gathering was addressed by local personalities and guest speakers, who spoke about AIDS and its prevention. Our Chief speaker was Ms Sunetra Chowdhury, AIDS Councilor, West Bengal State AIDS Prevention and Control Society and Chief Guest was Mr. Debashis Banerjee, Inspector-in-charge of Maheshtala Police Station. Among other speakers was Mr. Satabrata Dey, Zila Secretary, Paschim Bangla Bihgyan Mancha, Mr.Sujoy Das, Secretary, Maheshtala Thana Utsav Samanay Samity and Mr. Amalesh Sarkar, councilor, Ward No:32 Mehemanpur, Maheshtala Municipality. A big ambulance was decorated with the event banner which was brought by the Behala Rotaractors. Rotaractors who were present pinned all the ongoing general people with the “RED RIBBON” and also distributed leaflets containing the information about HIV and AIDS. The public gathering was sum up by giving a vote of thanks to all the speakers and guests present, which was followed by distribution of food packets.
The second half comprised of the “CYCLE RALLY”, which took place from Plaster More, near Maheshtala Municipality from 12:00noon. The rally was flagged off by Mr. Debashis Banerjee, Inspector-in-charge of Maheshtala Police Station in the presence of Maheshtala Municipality Councilor Mr. Amalesh Sarkar. The rally was escorted by an auto bearing our banner and announcing the cause and significance of the rally from the front, the cyclists were in the centre which was followed by a car and few bikes. The rally comprised of more than 30 participants, who rode the cycles from Plaster more to Bata more. The path of the rally was a 4 km approx stretch. The whole rally was supervised by the Maheshtala Police Station. The rally disbursed at 1:30pm and food packets were distributed to all the participants. This was an initiative by different rotaract clubs who intend to make the society a better place to live it by showcasing the importance and educating and causing awareness about HIV & AIDS. Unite we stand to fight the disease and prevent our society from HIV & AIDS through “ROTARACT FOR AIDS”. The event was attended by DS Rtr Vishal Pandey and Rtn Indu Bhusan Das, President (elect), Rotary club of Behala.
The whole event was initiated by ROTARACT CLUBS OF Behala, Budge Budge, Calcutta, Calcutta Dhakuria, Calcutta Lansdowne, Calcutta Metropolitan, Calcutta Midtown, Calcutta South City, Calcutta South Suburban, Calcutta South West, Calcutta Victoria, Heritage Institute of Technology, Joka, Kalighat, North Calcutta and Sodepur and was ably supported by Rotary Club of Behala and Inner Wheel Club of Behala, in association with Maheshtala Thana Utsav Sammanaye Samiti, Maheshtala Municipality, Maheshtala Police Station, Paschim Bangla Bigyan Mancha, Kolkata Oxygen-G Society and Indi profit Newspaper. The event was covered by Maheshtala Cable Network, Akash Bangla, E-TV Bangla and ATN Bangla

FREE CATARACT DETECTION CAMP

On 27th November, 09 Rotaract club of Behala organized a “FREE CATARACT DETECTION CAMP” in association with Oishani women welfare organization at Satish Mukherjee Road, kol-26 from 5:30pm onwards.
Team Behala organized such a camp for the first time in this rota-year (2009-10) and the response was very positive. It was organized in a very calm and composed way. Enrollments of the names were done few days back before the camp. The patients were all needy people who belonged from the nearby slam area. We also welcomed all those who came in as a walk in, from the nearby areas. The camp started in time and the doctor was very pleased to see the crowd outside her temporary chamber.
The whole idea of organizing such a camp was to detect people with cataract whose ages are above 50 years and having problem with their vision. The camp began with the first patient detected of cataract. In all, there were 54 people, among them 39 had a problem with low vision and 9 out of them were detected with cataract. Cake was given to everyone who came in for their check-up in the camp. The camp lasted till 8:00pm.
The local club was happy with the response. The patients, who were detected with cataract, were informed that they would require undergoing a surgery, next month at Dr. Nihar Munshi eye foundation which would be completely free of cost for them. Rotaract club of Behala is thankful to Rtn Manika Karmakar for giving her precious time for the check-up. Rtn Avijit uncle attended the camp and appreciated the effort we are bestowing towards the society. Food packets were given to the Rotarians. The camp was organized and co-ordinated very skillfully by our members and was supported by the local club.
The club members were very happy and satisfied by serving the society and helping those who need some assistance.

GRAND CLUB FELLOWSHIP

On 25th, November, 09 Rotaract Club of Behala organized a grand fellowship for its members from 5:00pm onwards at Rtr George’s residence.
The fellowship can be termed as a “multi-variety getogether”. It comprised of celebrating Rotaractors birthday’s, different games and finally a sumptuous dinner. It all started at 5:00pm when our club president called the meeting and few important projects were discussed. At 6:00pm he terminated the meeting and to everyone’s delight the fun began. First we enjoyed the chips, cold drinks and chocolate cake which was cut by two birthday girls, Rtr Mousumi (Vice-president) and Rtr Shireen (Director).Both of their faces were covered with cake and “thanks to other members”. It was real fun and everyone enjoyed it. Then we started with “UNO” which is the hot favourite game of our members. It was thoroughly enjoyed by us but to everyone’s surprise Rtr Dev became the clear winner by winning the maximum number of games.
This was just the first half, the second half started with “housie”. It started with a bang and Rtr George won the first two games but he lost the third one, which was won by Rtr Shireen. Over all Rtr George won the second game series. After playing games we are hungry and that’s the time the hot delicious food made it’s entry. The menu comprised of “sweet and sour paneer, chilli potato, egg korma, chilli chicken, sweets and roti”. We enjoyed the food and ate till we were full.
Overall we all enjoyed, had fun, were entertained, and finally satisfied with the whole fellowship program.

Movie show on World television day

Rotaract club of Behala organized a Movie show for the grandparents of Santi Niwas to mark “World Television Day” on Saturday, 21st November, 09.
We started the movie show, which was played through a projector and on a 35 sq feet screen, from 3:30 pm and all the inmates of Santi Niwas were more then excited to watch them. Keeping the request of the grandparents, we played two -back to back Bengali movies from the 1960’s. Both the movies were Uttam-Suchitra Classics- “Ekti Raat” and “Trijama” and the grandparents enjoyed them thoroughly.
As they don’t get to watch movies in theatres outside, movies being played on the screen and that too their favourite ones, they were too excited with the movie show concept and blessed us, all through the screening.
We also distributed some snacks to them after the completion of the first movie and they got into the feel of the situation and couldn’t stop waiting for the next movie to start. The movie show ended at around 8:45 pm and all this while they kept sitting and enjoying the movie without even blinking their eyelids.
After more than 5 hours of the movie show and some interactions with our dear grandparents, we decided to leave but only with a promise to go back soon to meet them and this time with an additional promise of organizing another movie show for them in the near future …………..

CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION AT UNDER-PRIVILEGED SCHOOL

On 14th, November, 09, Rotaract club of Behala celebrated children’s day at Janakalyan Bastuhara primary school from 11am onwards.
The program started with the sit and draw competition were the students took part. There was no topic, everyone was told to draw what they feel like. They were also told that there are 4(four) prizes to be won by among them, who deserve it.
The competition began from 11:15am, they were given the timing of 1(one) hour to finish their paintings. We also told them to write their names at the back of the drawing sheets.
Meanwhile we went to our Parent Rotary Children’s day program at Calcutta Blind School. While we went to the other program, the teachers looked after the students participating in the drawing. We attended the program and came back to the school.
Now it was time for the students to submit their drawings to us. With a brief selection we chose the clear winners, i.e., 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. We presented all the winner’s with drawing stationary’s and other stationaries. There was drawing stationary’s for all along with chips, cakes and toffee’s.
We then spend few minutes with the kids and interacted with the teacher’s. Finally it was time to say goodbye to all the students, last but not the least we all wished them “HAPPY CHILDREN’S DAY”. All the little one were very happy by drawing and getting thing which children of their age like the most, I think to a certain extend we also love drawing and munching chips and eating toffee’s.

CHILDREN’S DAY AND WORLD INTERACT WEEK CELEBRATION WITH MENTALLY CHALLENGED STUDENTS

On 13th, November, 09 Rotaract club of Behala celebrated “Children’s Day” and “World Interact Week” with the students of “MENTAID” (a school for the mentally challenged children), with Interact club of DAV Public School.

The program began when we reached the school at 11:00am. The teacher in charge greeted us with a warm welcome and escorted us to different class rooms. First we went to the top floor, when we entered all the students present gave us a friendly welcome and we shook hands. Then they showed us a dance composition on a Hindi song. After they were done, we gave them chips packets, cakes and toffees. The teacher took us to the different class rooms were we gave the food and all we got after giving it to everyone was a compassionate “thank you”. In all there were 90 students.

After our distribution was over the teacher in charge gave a brief introduction about how they function and work for the betterment of the students. They showed us the different vocational works and handworks the students have done. It gave us a very good and happy feeling about how they are making the students aware of their inner abilities. It is on our part that we encourage the authorities, to keep up the good work they are doing.
Spending over an hour finally we bid goodbye from all the students and promised them to be back very soon.

Homely Bijoya-diwali Get-2-gether

On 8th November, 09 Rotaract Club of Behala organized as like every year a very homely and sparkling Bijoya-Diwali Get-2-gether at Chetla Boys’ High School in Chetla from 6:30 pm onwards.
The program started with a small welcoming narration by Rtr Debjyoti, who handed over the microphone to President Rtr Soummojit who requested everyone; present, to stand for the national anthem, which was followed by a lighting of “Diyas” by President of Rotary club of Behala- Rtn Deepnath Roychoudhury along with all the Rotarians and Inner wheel club of Behala president- Ann Sudipta Chakraborty.
The host for the evening to conduct the event was Jt. Sect Rtr Debdatta. The event started with prospective member Nivedita chanting on some Rabindra sangeet to bring in the feel to the event. Then the audience was taken off their feet with a stupendous dance performance by Debarati- sister of Rtr Debjyoti who performed to one excellent “ganesh vandana” and the highlight of the dance was her simultaneous drawing of Lord ganesh on a white board.
The event following were Songs performed by President Rtr Soummojit, Rtr Shireen, Rtr Debjyoti and recitation by Secretary of Rotaract Club of Joka- Rtr Sromona and a closing dance by Debarati again.
Rtr Debjyoti along with his friend Rajorshi on the guitar did a wonderful job singing four back to back songs from Hindi movies. But the day was of our President Rtr Soummojit who was cheered thoroughly for his performance of “romantic Bengali and Hindi songs”. Rtn Deepnath Roy Chowdhury-President Rotary Club of Behala in his speech praised us and wished us lucked.Rtn Siddharth Chakraborty as like every year presented the audience with some meaningful, yet witty jokes with his inimitable style and Rtn Krishnendu Bhattacharya was an instant hit with his few lines of “Shader Lou”- a popular Bengali song.
In between, President-elect Rtr Shuvranshu also announced our club’s plan to generate funds for community service events, by selling rags and old stuffs that lie in our houses.
All Rotarians present were felicitated with flower sticks in between the performances along with inner wheel club of Behala president and DRR (E) Rtr Aanton Mookherjee and the guest performers. All Rotarians greeted us for the wonderful show as like our DRR (E) and DS Rtr Vishal did.
Secretary Rtr George gave the vote of thanks to all present and also, did, call upon Disha and Sanandi- daughters of Rtn Deepnath uncle and Rtn Indu uncle and Saurav-son of Rtn Krishnendu uncle to announce the three winners of our lucky draw for the evening, which was a special surprise for the evening. The three winners were Rtr Soma, Rtr Joyabrata and Mrs. Sharmistha Bhattacharya.
The event ended successfully, food packets were distributed to all and the attendance was 59 which many thought could have been better.

As like every year Rotaract Club of Behala along with Rotary club of Behala celebrated Diwali with the inmates of Santi Niwas. We were all there in Santi Niwas by 7:30pm and distributed some snacks and sweets. After having some interesting conversations with the grandparents, we started bursting crackers with them. As like every year, they took active participation in bursting crackers. We had a variety of crackers for our grandparents and it was simply amazing to spend the evening with them. After bursting the crackers it was time for some thanksgiving and our president elect Rtr Shuvranshu had some words to share with our so very loving grandparents. After the thanksgiving we also distributed mosquito nets to them with which they were over enthusiastic. They even selected the colour of the mosquito nets they wanted and blue colour seemed to be the clear favourite.
During the bursting of crackers, every inmate wanted a snap of them to be taken with the burning crackers which clearly made us think how they were enjoying themselves with those crackers.
Before we left after spending almost 4 hours with them, we had to make sure that we promised, like always, to visit them in the near future.

Celebration of Birthdays of PP Rtr Paromita & Rtr George at Santi Niwas

On 4th October, 09 Rotaract club Of Behala visited Santi Niwas to celebrate the birthdays of Rtr George (3rd Oct) and PP Rtr Paromita (4th Oct) with the grandparents.
We reached Santi Niwas at around 6:30pm and shared sweets and some snacks with the grandparents, who were very happy to have us again by their side and they thoroughly enjoyed the evening with us.
Unfortunately, PP Rtr Paromita and Rtr George were both unable to be present due to some other commitments but their “Treat” was enjoyed by the Grandparents with the other Rotaractors present.
New member Rtr Subhra Kamal even sang some Bengali songs for the inmates along with President Rtr Soummojit and prospective member Souvik even showed some dancing talents to the grandparents. We spend around 2 quality hours with them before saying good0bye with a promise as usual to meet very soon……………………………………

LUNCH WITH GRANDPARENTS

On 2nd October, 2009, on the occasion of “Gandhi Jayanti”, Twin Clubs Rotaract club of Behala and Rotaract club of Calcutta Lansdowne organized a lunch with grandparents of Santi Niwas (an old age home) in Janakalyan at Behala.
The grand parents took their respective places in the dining room. We even served the food to them and they started with their lunch. The raw material marketing was also done by us in the morning. On their request, we also had our lunch along with them. After lunch we spend a quality time with them and promised to meet them very soon before saying goodbye.
Rotaract Club of Behala’s two prospective members also joined in for the lunch.

Puja Parikrama

On 25th, September, 2009, Rotaract club of Behala and Rotary club of Behala jointly arranged for a puja parikrama with the students of “Mentaid (a school for the mentally challenged)”, inmates of “Santi Niwas (an old age home)” and inmates of “Apon Ghar (an old age home).
We started the parikrama in two buses. One started from Behala Chowrasta and the other from KFR field. We provided everyone with breakfast in the bus. The first stop was at “EKDALIA”, from where we began our pandal hopping of Maha-saptami morning with grandparents along with the special children. We went inside the pandal through the VIP entrance and like every year Mr. Subrata Mukherjee, MLA joined us in welcoming them to the pandal and also distributed sweets among them. It was an eye candy for those who love to watch Goddess Durga’s idol in its original and gorgeous form. From there we proceeded towards “SINGHI PARK”. And seeing “SINGHI PARK”, we went for “PARK CIRCUS”.
After covering “PARK CIRCUS”, we went to pandals of North Calcutta to sum up our parikrama. And finally we had a delicious lunch at “BHIM NAG’S HOUSE”. Then, it was time to go home and we did the same.
Last but not the least we all had a blast along with grandparents and the special children. And most importantly, they also enjoyed every moment of the puja parikrama.

Visit to the grand-moms and grand-dads

On Sunday, 20th September, 09, Rotaract club of Behala along with parent rotary- Rotary club of Behala visited Santi Niwas and Apon Ghar (Old Age homes) and gifted the inmates with new clothes for Puja.
Around 10 am Rotaractors of RC Behala and Rotarians of RC Behala entered Santi Niwas and after interacting with them for some time started giving them the new clothes. The inmates of Santi Niwas as always were really excited with us visiting them and gifting them with new clothes for the pujas. We gifted the female inmates with, sarees and male inmates with, shirts and lungis. Sweets were distributed among all and after spending some quality time there, we headed for Apon ghar were some other grandmas were in waiting for us to arrive. As soon as we arrived there we asked them about their health and started gifting them with the same as of Santi Niwas. After spending some more time with them, we started leaving but before leaving we informed them about our plans of Puja parikrama on saptami with them. We had also done the same in Santi Niwas, informing about puja parikrama.
It was a day were every member was utterly satisfied with the kind of enthusiasm we got to see from the grandmas and granddads, but at the same time the very thought of them staying away from their families, made us feel extremely sad
We were also joined by two of our prospective club members who were attending their 2nd club project after the last club fellowship.

On 17th September, 09, Rotaract Club of Behala had a club fellowship at Rtr Souvik’s house to celebrate Vishwakarma puja.
After the 322nd RGM on the same day, we went to fly kites on the terrace of Rtr Souvik’s house. We had an enjoyable time flying kites and competing with the other kite fliers in the area. After an hour of enjoyable kite flying, we had a delicious fellowship with a variety of Snacks and chips and cold-drinks.
All the members, present, enjoyed a lot as it is always very welcoming for each member to have a get-together and spend some time with the club members. After about two and half hours of fun and chatting, the fellowship came to an end with the members heading for heir respective destinations and wishing each other luck for the pujas and the club projects to come………………………………………………………..

Joint Jumble Sale

Rotaract club of Behala, Calcutta Mega-city and Calcutta south-west jointly organized a jumble sale at Howrah on Monday, 14th Sept, 09 from 12pm onwards. It was a great experience for the 3 clubs as they got together at Rtr Shreyoshi’s ancestral house in Howrah for the jumble sale. We had taken with us a lot of clothes along with some shoes, bangles and bags, which was put up for sale.
The start to the sale was really good and it took pace from there. A large crowd started gathering with mostly Rickshaw pullers from the area and the sale went on with a lot of bargaining. We sold the clothes and the other stuffs for a very cheep price ranging from Rs10 to Rs50 and this made the buyers really happy as they were poor people who couldn’t afford to buy expensive stuffs.
By the time we wrapped up the sale by around 3:30pm, it was a really good experience for all of us. Men’s clothes were sold more then that of the female ones but overall it was a good sale….

A Day at Nalgora

Rotaract club of Behala visited Nalgora (SAP) and distributed along with parent rotary- Rotary club Of Behala 1000 copies and 40 geometry boxes to the students from different schools of the area.
It was around 9 am when Rotaractors of RC Behala along with the Rotarians of Rotary club of Behala started of for Nalgora from Balananda Brahmachari hospital. After a journey of 3 and half hours , we reached Nalgora where we were welcomed whole heartedly. Then after some inspirational words for the students present, from the Rotarians and our club president, we started distributing the copies we had taken with us. We distributed 4 copies each, bearing the names of Rotary club of Behala Rotaract club of Behala and also the rotary RCC. After distributing the copies to the students from class 1 to class 12, we started distributing the geometry boxes to the senior students who were in dire need of the same. We also promised to gift the RCC with black boards to enable them to start with an English language class. We also assured every help possible from our part to them in future. They had also arranged lunch for us, and, after interacting with the students and their mothers for some time we decided to leave for Kolkata but not before wishing them all the luck and a heartiest good bye…….only with a promise to meet again in future………………………………………………………………………………………………

School bags to the less privileged students on World literacy day

8th September- World Literacy day and Rotaract club of Behala was all ready to distribute school bags to the less privileged students of Janakalyan Bastuhara School in Janakalyan, Chowrasta-Behala. Rotaract club of Calcutta South-West were also joining us for their own project but in the same place and same time………
All was well till the 2 Rotaract clubs reached Behala Chowrasta. Just few metres away from the actual destination, i.e., Janakalyan Bastuhara School, we realized that the rain gods had separate plans for us......the simple literacy day project of distributing stuffs to the less privileged was now converted into an adventurous one…………………the reason ? Knee length water logging in front of the school.
So, despite a car with us, we the Rotaractors from the 2 clubs got down at some distance from the school and had to board rickshaws…..but that too wasn’t easy. It was raining heavily and rickshaws wanted absurd amount of money to take us to the school, but after a brief bargaining session, we boarded the same and were of to our destination.
Reaching the school, we started distributing school bags to the students present…………..There were small students who looked extremely happy to receive much needed school bags. RC Calcutta south-west also started distributing their stationery for the students and the students were simply overwhelmed by the gifts they received…..
Because of the heavy rain and water logging in Behala, many students couldn’t make it to school but we handed over their bags to the teachers present, who assured us of handing them over to the students the next day they turn up. The teachers also offered us tea but because we had made the rickshaws wait outside, we couldn’t spend more time out there and also interact with the students……..But before we left, we wished the students good luck and they also thanked us with innocent smiles on their faces…….
So our fun-filled adventure ended as we stepped again inside the car, happy and wet……………………………

1st Club Assembly (2009-10)

Rotaract club of Behala had their first club assembly on 6th September, 09 at Calcutta blind school from 5:30 pm onwards.
This was the first club assembly of the club but unfortunately, few Rotaractors turned up because of the heavy rainfall that was happening.
the speakers of the evening were Rtn Deepnath Roychoudhury-President Rotary club Of Behala, Rtn Dr Siddharth Chakraborty-Community service director- Rotary Club of Behala, DRR(E) Rtr Aanton Mookherjee and Advisor to the DRR Rtr Shankar Narayan Saha. the speakers spoke extremely well on what the club should do to work even better. Rtr Aanton and Rtr Shankar spoke on their experience regarding multi-district activities, which was one of the topic for the club assembly. they also kept their opinion on fund raising activities, Rotary-Rotaract relation and some upcoming projects of our club. Rtn Deepnath Roychoudhury and Rtn Siddharth Chakraborty kept their views on the topics and also ensured as always of their wonderful support that we are blessed with. Rtr Piu Mookherjee (cluster rep, cluster 3 ) was also present on the occasion. we also launched the 3rd edition of our official club bulletin "Santoor" on the occasion and we had a small fellowship to sum up the event but not without the members present being enlighted with the good words spoken by the honorable speakers.

Visit to Indore, R.I.D 3040

Rtr Aditi Dube- international service director of Rotaract club of Behala visited Indore, Madhya Pradesh, R.I.D 3040 from 10th Aug, 09 to 29th Aug, 09 and visited Rotaract creative club of Indore greater. She also participated in a Independence Day celebration, where the Rotaractors along with the Rotarians of Rotaract creative club of Indore hoisted flags and sang the national anthem. She presented the Rotaract club with our official club bulletin, club letterhead, a token of appreciation and DRR’s theme badge of our district. She met the club twice and got a very good reception from them. The DRR of the R.I.D 3040 also contacted her over the phone, who was from Sagar and not from Indore, the reason why they couldn’t meet. Rtr Aditi was supposed to return back to Kolkata much before, but due to some problem regarding tickets; her journey back home was delayed.

RAINBOW with 25 other Rotaract clubs

Rotaract Club of Behala along with 25 other Rotaract clubs, hosted the biggest rotaract event of the year till date- RAINBOW in ICCR. There was performance from special children from Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP) and Asha Niketan followed by a talent competition among underprivileged schools where 5 schools participated. Then was a choreography contest among Dance schools. Three schools fought for the winner’s trophy that was won by Pushpashree School for their fusion dance performance on the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’.to sum up the event was a fashion show by Rotaractors. The judges for the event were Dhiman Shankar, Bishnu Dhar, Inner Wheel District 329 Chairperson Snigdha Barat, Rtn Sovan Banerjee and Rtn Ratna Sinha. The chairperson of the event was our president-elect Rtr Shuvranshu.

On 16th, august, 09 Rotaract club of Behala and Rotaract club of Calcutta Lansdowne met rotaractors of Rotaract club of Beanibazar from Bangladesh, RID 3280. we interacted with them and also discussed the kind of projects we do in the two districts.......we presented them with our club bulletin and letterhead..they also offered us with some sweets and after an interaction of over 2 hours we left for our club's joint meeting with RC Budge-Budge and Rtr Sujon also joined us.....

independence day celebration

On 15th, August, 09, Rotaract club of Behala along with Rotary club of Behala celebrated independence day with a bunch of projects through the day. We wished the Rotarians a happy Independence Day.
The day started with flag hoisting at Calcutta Blind School, the hoisting was done by ex-principle of Calcutta Blind School, along with us and Rotarians. We sang the National Anthem while the flag was being hoisted. Then we moved on to the school auditorium for a cultural presentation by students of the school. First the students felicitated us, and then they performed which mainly comprised of solo singing, group song and etc. While the program was on a full swing we distributed food packets among all the students. With the end of the program we left for ………………………………
Mohonananda Bramhachari Sishu Seva Pratisthan, which was our next destination for the day. We went to the maternity ward of the hospital and meet the mothers and other patients, and distributed fruits among them. Wishing them a speedy recovery, we left for……………………………………
Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital. First we made our way to the children’s ward, were we distributed fruits, chips, biscuits, etc to all the small kids. We also spend a quality time with them. We then moved onto the next block which was the critical children’s ward, over there also we spend a perfect time and distributed all the above foods and wished them a faster recovery as soon as possible.
So we spend the Independence Day morning with a self satisfaction and fulfillment at heart. Now we bid the Rotarians a goodbye and left for our club fellowship.
We went to Café Coffee Day at Newalipur. It was 1pm in the afternoon and we started our I-Day fellowship. We had a whole lot of fun and after a perfect fellowship when it was 4:30pm and time for us to leave for our respective houses, so we all left, leaving the table vacant for the next customer to occupy it.
It was a Day of fun, satisfaction, and everything we planned and expected to happen. That’s it for the year 2009…………………….hope for the best next year.

Hosting IPDRR of R.I.D 3240

On 6th, august, 2009, Rotaract club of Behala hosted IPDRR Rtr Sourav Bajoria of RID 3240. It was a pleasure meeting Rtr Sourav after some time, as he’s been a great friend to RC Behala. We spoke for about 3 hrs and discussed different topics including rotaract laws, district, and our home clubs. It was indeed great to exchanging views with an IPDRR of our neighboring district, who simply is a wonderful person.
We had snacks and cold drinks. We presented him with the latest copy of our club’s official bulletin “SANTOOR” and gave a token of appreciation. Our secretary handed over to him with our DRR’s Theme Badge. He presented us with a copy of the District Directory of RID 3240.
In all it was an enjoyable time spent for us interacting with Rtr Sourav. We decided to meet him the very next day along with other Rotaractors from our district.

Rakhi celebration all the way

On 5th, august, 2009 rotaract club of Behala went all the way from Behala to central Calcutta to celebrate rakhi to mark “Raksha Bandhan”.
The day started on a very positive note at “BEHALA BODHYAN”, a school for the mentally and physically challenged children. Our club members were greeted with a warm welcome at the gates of the school. After a brief official time, they tied rakhi’s to our hand and we also did the same. We distributed sweets. We along tied rakhi to their Principal’s arm and he blessed us with good wishes. Like last year we could not stay there for long as other parts of Calcutta was also eagerly waiting for us. A small and sweet bye to all for the time being……………….
Now we were of to “VIDYASAGAR HOSPITAL”, which is in Behala tram depot , we were surprised to see the co-operation from the hospital authority; they assisted all the way to all the general male wards were our members tied rakhi’s and wished them for a speedy recovery and in return we got lovely smiles form each one of them. We then tied rakhi to the Superintendent of the hospital; he showed his gratitude towards us and appreciated our effort and work. We got excellent support from Rtn Sujoy uncle for our project in this hospital. We left with a satisfaction…………………
Third on our list was “MENTAID”, a school for the mentally challenged children. With our arrival into the school the teacher in-charge gave a brief history of the school and took us the students. When we entered they started singing for us with teacher’s co-coordinating them properly. We also did the same by tieing rakhi’s to their hands and gave them sweets; they also tied rakhi’s to our arm. Then they performed for us with different songs. For few moments we enjoyed to the fullest and vice-versa. Last but not the least we also tied rakhi’s to the teacher’s hands, including the teacher-in-charge of the school. We got a wonderful support from Ranjana aunty towards this project in here. The teachers thanked us all the way when and we bid goodbye to all of them and promised to meet soon………………….
Now, it was time to travel out of Behala and make a move towards the central location whish is “CALCUTTA MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL”. We went to the David Hare Block of the college and right away headed towards the “Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery” department. We then celebrated rakhi with the inmates and wished them a quick recovery. Few of the inmates were very excited and even gave us fruits to show their happiness. Rtn Dr Siddhartha uncle helped us a lot to do the project out here.
Last but not the least unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances we could not go to “CALCUTTA BLIND SCHOOL”. With a brief talk with the principal we shifted the visit to 6th, august, 2009 from 4:30pm. We were very fortunate and happy to go on 6thof august and tied rakhi’s to the students and gave them sweets. The school authorities were very co-operative and appreciated our work which we are carrying it for many years from now.
At last this years “RAKSHA BANDHAN” was a special one for us because we reached out to more people and tied rakhi’s to more than 350(three hundred and fifty)people, which till date is the biggest rakhi celebration of our club.

Awareness Campaign on Breast feeding to mark World Breast feeding week

ON sunday, 2nd august,09 Rotaract club of behala did walk in a rally along with 3 Rotary clubs and 5 inner wheel clubs to campaign for the awareness of Breast feeding to mark World breast feeding week. we started from Mohonananda Hospital in Behala and after walking for an hour across Diamond Harbour Road and the adjacent streets we finally ended the rally coming back to Mohonananda Hospital. the Chief resource in the rally in forms of banners, placards and slogans were provided by Indian academy of Paediatrics who were the main organisers.

the main objective of the campaign was to spread awareness among the comman man, with the advantages of breast feeding over its alternatives. till date it is a proven fact that breast feeding remains the best supply of strength and nutrition for a new born and it in fact is also helpful for the mother. breast feeding can never be substituted by any artificial drink and helps in building a strong person out of the infant.

in todays world breast feeding is being highly and extensively subtituted by its alternatives but the fact remains that the alternative drinks fails to supply the required nutrition and strength. our campaign was to make the people aware of the facts which is unknown to many.

the rally was followed by a small seminar in Mohonananda hospital where many specialized doctors and speakers enlighted the mothers present with the positives of Breast feeding which in fact has no adversities.

the seminar ended on a high note with mothers and all present promising to spread the right awareness and help in build a strong future.........

13th Installation ceremony

Rotaract club of Behala organized its 13th installation ceremony and 315th regular general meeting on Saturday 18th July, 2009 at east India pharmaceuticals hall, above Basusree cinema hall from 5:30 pm onwards. The registration started from 5pm and the installation ceremony started on time at 5:30pm.

The moderator for the evening was Rtr George, who called upon the president Rtr Soummojit Mukherjee and Secretary (2009-10) Rtr Shuvranshu, to the dais, which was followed by the collaring of the president and the meeting being called to order. The dais was eventually shared by the Guest of Honour Rtn Chitralekha Ghosh (DRCC 2009-10), DRR (2009-10) Rtr Ayesha Alam, Parent Rotary President Rtn Deepnath Roychoudhury, DGN Rtn Angshuman Bandopadhyay along with the club president and secretary. The ceremony was of grandeur with the proceedings falling into the right places, right from the National anthem sung by Late Rabindra Nath Tagore, to, the message from Rtr Isil Boyaci, president –International twin club Rotaract club of Bostanli, Turkey, R.I.D 2440. The president though was not installed as he has been in charge for the last 3 months but a formal introduction of him was presented by Rtn Dr. Siddharth Chakraborty-Dir Community service-Rotary club of Behala through a projector.

The new board for the Rota-year 2009-10 was introduced by the president and New member Debjyoti Mitra Roy was inducted into the club by DRR Rtr Ayesha Alam. Activities report for the last year was presented through a slide show and the theme for the Rota-year 2009-10 along with the installation bulletin was unveiled.

The attendance at the ceremony was 94 and the speakers for the evening were Rtn Rajani Mukherjee- Vice-Chairman (RI Interact committee), Rotary IPP Rtn Rita Das, President (Rotary club of Behala) Rtn Deepnath Roy Chowdhury, DGN Rtn Angshuman Bandopadhyay, GML Chairman PP Rtn Krishnendu Bhattacharya, Rtn Dr. Siddharth Chakraborty, Rtn Prasunjit Mukherjee, Rtn Bimal Pal, Rtn Sujoy Kr. Bhadra, Ann Sudipta Chakraborty, Rtn Chitralekha Ghosh, IPDRR Rtr Ritwik Bhattacharya, DRR(E) Rtr Aanton Mukherjee and DRR Rtr Ayesha Alam.

Our intra-district twin club president Rtr Sourav was also present at the occasion and did say a few words but not before presenting our club president with a bouquet of flowers. All guest were felicitated on the occasion and Rotary IPP Rtn Rita Das and Rtn Dr. Siddharth Chakraborty were given special appreciation for their support and help in the last Rota-year.

The event was followed by dinner, but the surprise of the evening was when our Rotary president announced that the full dinner would be sponsored by our parent Rotary-Rotary club of Behala.

In all, the event was a successful one with a total of 67 Rotaractors from 20 Rotaract clubs along with 17 Rotarians, 2 Ann’s and 8 guests attending the event.

Interact Presentation

On 16th, July, 2009, Rotaract club of Behala gave an interact presentation at DAV public school, taratala, Kolkata. The presentation began a bit late due to problems on the road by political parties.

The program was attended byDICC Rtn Niharendu Chakravarty, Rtn (Dr) Siddhartha Chakraborty (Director-community service and youth, Rotary club of Behala), Rtn Prasunjit Mukherjee (Secretary, Rotary club of Behala), Rtn Jayanta Kr Mitra (Director-vocational service, Rotary club of Behala).

Before the start of the program the Principal of DAV public school greeted us with warm regards. The program started with a brief introduction of Rotary International and Interact clubs, by Rtr Shuvranshu Mitra. The proceedings were then handed over to the DICC Rtn Niharendu Chakravarty, who on his part gave a brief introduction of himself and what interact movement is all about. The program took an interesting bend when we started of with the power point presentation on the “big screen”, the crowd of more than 200 students cheered aloud. Rtr Shuvranshu conducted the whole presentation with explanation on different slides on the PowerPoint. The questions, doubts, and queries were simply answered by Rtn Niharendu Chakravarty himself. The students once came into the mood and tempo of “knowing interact” asked as many questions as possible on that limited time period.

While the slides keep slipping through the time the students at large became restless to form and join the club. So through the advent of time Rtn Niharendu Chakravarty and Rtr Shuvranshu, cleared all their doubts and finally completed the presentation.

The urge among the students to open an interact club, after the program was a delight for us. We were happy and overwhelmed by the response of the students and the teachers. The principal then gave us a tea invitation at his office.

The day went properly with a promising note. The DICC was happy with the response, the Behala Rotarians and we were delighted. Special thanks to Rtr Shuvratav Mitra, who visited the school numerous time to make this happen and Teacher-in-charge Mrs. Piyali Sen for co-coordinating with us perfectly.

Fellowship @ Rtr Souvik's Residence

On 12th, July, 2009, Rotaract club of Behala had their 1st club’s fellowship of the new rota-year 2009-10.

We the members were hungry for a fellowship after 4th July, it was the perfect time and reason to make it large and happening, when we finally meet for a chit-chat and some club business. So the date was finalized and we organized ourselves for a nice warm fellowship. 11th, July was PP Rtr Souvik Banerjee’s birthday, so to make it a event full of surprises we decided to move on with the plans and programmes without uttering it to Souvik da. But unfortunately the venue was his residence and fortunately we are planning to have the same.

So on 12th, July, 09, we all gathered and made our way to the destined place with the luggage’s (food and beverages). Many many happy returns for the day were the first and last word came out of our mouths together when he answered the door bell. The plan was successful because Souvik da returned us with an all out smile.

Its time to bring in the cake, it was yummy with rich chocolates over it. Other snacks were also arranged for the same. Members present enjoyed after a long time and were satisfied to the fullest. We played some indoor games such as the……………………………………………….

It started in time but the end was not scheduled, but the wall clock gave us a signal that its time for us to be casted away to our respected homes.

Last but not the least the year started with a bang, our 1st fellowship was a great hit among members and on demand we also have started planning for such meetings sooooon enough so that the zeal and level of enjoyment remains the same all over again.

On 27th june,2009 , in the annual Rotary awards at Birla Sabhaghar, Rotaract club of Behala was declared as the BEST ROTARACT CLUB for the year 2008-09. it was an overhelming moment for the rotaractors of behala as well as the Rotarians of Behala. We the Rotaractors of Behala received the award along with our very loved rotary president Rtn Rita Das. the award was handed over to us by the DG(2008-09) Rtn Nayantara Pal Choudhury. the DRR Rtr Ritwik Bhattacharya, DRR(E)Rtr Ayesha and all the other rotaractors from other rotaract clubs present, congratulated us. Rotaract always stands for Humanity world wide. When people are in distress, Rotaract reaches out to help. As the cyclone – “Aila” hits the shores of West Bengal; it creates havoc and devastated the lives of millions of people of Bengal, particularly in southern parts of the state.

Sundarban, with no natural protection against such disasters’ face the maximum damage. Specially, the areas which are surrounded by rivers and have no or limited access by road has been still suffering a lot.

As “Partners’ in Service” of the WORLDS BIGGEST NGO - Rotary International, we the Rotaract clubs has taken the initiative to reach out to the people of Sundarbans. Our main aim is to provide as much support as possible in terms in the areas of basic needs for living.

In that quest, we already have generated some funds and utilized them in the best way possible. We have made and distributed 4000 drinking water pouches to the villagers of Rangabelia region.

On 11^th June, 2009 seven Rotaract clubs namely, Rotaract clubs of Behala, Lansdowne, Joka, North Calcutta, Calcutta Metropolitan, Calcutta, and Calcutta South-West has start their journey from Kolkata to Sundarban with the collected relief of Food Items like rice, chira, suger, Dals, Muri (Puffed rice) etc. and basic medicines for general water born diseases and ORS and some clothes. Our first stop was Basanti and then we went straight to Godkhali, the end point for road transport. Their, we visited the local camp office of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, talked to the volunteers to evaluate the damage done by the cyclone and the places where the relief is mostly needed. We hand over the medicines to the doctors of the camp to make the use of it in a more sensible and safe manner.

Then we hired a boat and set our target to one of the untouched areas of the Sunderbans, in the banks of Gosaba River our destination was, 7 no. Dulki. Alone our journey through the river, the prominence of disaster was visible on the both shores. The houses and trees have fallen. The Dams were destructed badly. The farmlands have turned into the ponds of salty waters. Thousands of cattle’s had died. The peoples who have been speared by the water and storms have zero belongings to restart their lives and are solely dependent on the relief materials which were provided to them by Govt. or other NGOs.

We distributed everything we have - material relief items and undying spirit of Humanity. With a promise of coming back to them in whatever capacity possible, we set to get back to the comforts of our homes, by sheer luck which was speared by the devastation.

Our Heart felt Thanks go to all the persons who have supported us financially and emotionally including the employees’ of CRI Limited, Rubi Air Fright, and all the personal donors. It’s the effort and support of them only by which we could make this thing happened. The volunteers participated were - Rtr.Subhasis, Rtr.Souvik and Rtr.George from Rotaract club of Behala, Rtr.Debayan and Rtr.Sourav from Rotaract club of Lansdowne, and Rtr. Prem from Rotaract club of Joka.

PS: during our journey twice we faced with accidents. Though we were not hurt, but the ambulance was damaged badly.

SANTI NIWAS is an old age home for both men and women.. it is situated in Oxford Mission in Behala Chowrasta. On our last visit toSANTI NIWAS on 30th may,09, we had a quality time out there. Through the chatting process we found that they don’t get to watch all the programs on televisison because they don’t have cable connection out there. Some regretted of missing the IPL2, some don’t get to watch old Bengali films, and some regretted missing the champions league final

It struck us like a thunder bolt- In 2009, our grandparents didn’t get to watch cable television??So the idea struck us of providing them with cable connection. TO GIVE THEM THE PLEASURE OF WATCHING PROPER TELEVIOSION PROGRAMS.

N the very same day, we ha a look into their tv and rushed to the nearest cable operator.

When they were aware of us providing them with cable connection, they were simply too happy to express themselves properly-ALL OF THEM SMILED ALL THE WAY THROUGH OUR COVERSATION REGARDING THE CABLE PROGRAMS.

The day arrived and we were happy enough to provide them with a cable connection. This effort would be a continuous project for us as we take the whole financial responsibility for an indefinite period.

Blood donation camp at Ceratizit

BLOOD donation to SAVE a life in danger.On 5th, June, 09 Rotaract club of Behala organised a blood donation camp at Ceratizit from 11am onwards.It was a successful donation camp, from the morning the blood donors assembled quickly to help the drying blood bank in the state. So what to do next? Just lie down in the bed specially destined for the donors. The doctors were the ones, who helped the donors thereafter. Blood was being collected in pouches.............. Conquering the fear of injection, the first time donors made a great effort to ease themselves at the bed to contribute to the society at large.There were many donors but special mention needed for first time donors from rotaract behala were Rtr Shuvratav (George) and Rtr Fraser. We felt proud that our club members did something useful and meaningful contribution to the community.To assist the whole program an efficient medical team from Calcutta Medical College and Hospital came. They were happy and satisfied by the number of donors in the camp.Bananas, eggs, cakes were given to all the donors after giving blood. Last but not the least the whole camp gave many more behala rotaractors and others the motivation to give blood in the up-coming camps in the near future.........................................

An evening at Shanti Niwas

Today, our Club members visited Shanti Niwas – an old age home, to spend some quality time with ‘our’ grandparents. For over two and a half hours!

We reached the place around 6pm with some chips and biscuits for our grandparents. Rtr. Soummojit started the interactions with some beautiful songs, both in Hindi and Bengali, which was followed by some song performances by the inmates. They even offered us tea. We went on with our interaction, often joking with them and they doing the same. Some of them even shared some funny moments of their life.

After some time they started of with their daily prayer and we joined in. Though they were very happy with our presence, their happiest moment came when we, unlike ever, gifted them with an album containing some photos of theirs that we had taken throughout the year. They were overwhelmed with this small effort of ours, evident from the way they enjoyed watching the photographs.

When we left Shanti Niwas, they all blessed us and wished to see us very soon again and we did promise to meet them again very soon.

Face to Face, To Face the Facts

We organized our Club Assembly for the Rota-Year 2008-09 today at the meeting room of Calcutta Blind School at around 5.30pm. It was organized along with our Regular General Meeting..

In the Assembly, discussions were done regarding Rotary-Rotaract Relationship, how to do community service projects and in which fields, funding of big projects, member retention plans, how to spread Rotaract movement among colleges, role of Rotaract District Council, joints projects, fund raising programs, and many others.

Speakers included an illustrious list of Rotarians and Rotaractors. To start with was PP Rtn Debabrata Joardar of Rotary club of Behala, Rtr Ritwik Bhattacharjee (DRR 08-09), Rtr Aanton Mookherjee (District Trainer 08-09) and Rtn Bimal Pal (DRCC 08-09). The guests included Rtn Rita Das, President Rotary club of Behala, Rtn Dr. Siddhartha Chakraborty, Youth Service Director Rotary club of Behala and PP Rtn Krishnendu Bhattacharjee of Rotary Club of Behala.

It was a prefect gathering where every club member was benefited by the amount of discussions done. In fact, this was the best ever face-face interaction of the members of Behala with the District officials till date.

During the Assembly our Secretary read the long list of projects done by us from 1st July 08 till 23rd May, 09. We also inaugurated the third issue of our club’s official bulletin ‘Santoor’. In between the brilliant speeches by our guest’s speakers, Itr Saurav Bhattacharjee was felicitated by Rtr Aanton Mookherjee for his excellent result in ICSE exams.

It was a full house program with club members attending in good numbers as we called it a day with some snacks and pastries.

Walk for Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life

Today, on the occasion of World Asthma Day, 25 Rotaract Clubs got together to organise a rally on awareness on asthma and anti-smoking, initiated by the Rotaract district council.

The rally was a huge success with even members from Interact Clubs of St. Thomas Boys School and St. Joseph and Mary’s School joining the Rotaractors in the walk. The Rotaractors distributed leaflets to create the awareness of the cause along with the rally, which started from Deshapriya Park and ended in Gariahat crossing.

After the rally an asthma detection campaign was carried out in different hospitals across the city. Along with the detection drive, leaflets were also distributed for Rotaract promotion and Asthma awareness.

The campaign was even carried out in some colleges which yielded in a huge response.

It was a quality project and campaign by the Rotaractors which was also covered in The Statesman.

This was the biggest event of the year and one of its kind with so many Rotaract Clubs hitting the roads of Kolkata for an entire day to work for a social cause. It created a huge goodwill for Rotaract at large and a very positive image for the movement.

The PETS and SETS for the year 2009-10 made a dream come true for “Team Behala” as we launched the first Special Magazine and District News Letter of 2008-09, today at Aikatan.Rtn Chitralekha Ghosh DRCC (09-10), Rtn Rajani Mukherjee DICC (08-09), Rtr Ritwik Bhattacharya DRR (08-09) Rtr Shuvratav Mitra- Secretary, RC Behala (09-10), and Rtr Piu Mookherjee – President, RC Cal Dhakuria (2008-09), unveiled the inaugural edition.

The magazine featured introductions of different clubs along with some creative writings from different Rotaractors. It also features the DRR’s pick of different projects done by the clubs on an individual basis.The cover story was on Nepal visit by the District Council members and clubs from our District. Rotaract Behala also contributed to the creative side. Rtr Shuvratav was good at the editorial and Rtr Soumojit on his message as the Vice-President of Rotaract Behala. Messages from DRR (08-09) Rtr Ritwik Bhattacharya, DRR (09-10) Rtr Ayesha Alam, and DRR (10-11) Rtr Aanton Mookherjee also featured in the special magazine.The magazine named, BLURB, became a success and was possible because of constant efforts from Rtr Shuvratav and Rtr Aanton.

Rotaract Behala was able to bring the magazine because of help from the District Council (08-09) and Rotaract club of Calcutta Dhakuria for making this happen successfully.

Ek Saathe Baishakhe

Today, 17 Rotaract Clubs got together to organise Ek Saathe Baishake, at Indumati Sabhagriha, in Jadavpur University Campus from 5 pm onwards to welcome Baisakh.

It was an excellent event where the Rotaractors celebrated the Bengali month ‘Baishakh’, the Bengali New Year month as well as the month when our very own Rabindranath Tagore was born.

The chief guest of the evening was Rtn. Utpal Mazumdar, DG-ELECT, RID 3291. Among other Rotarians present were Rtn Angshuman Bandopadhyay DG-2011-12, RID 3291, District Secretary (admn), 2009-10, GML Chairperson (2008-09) Rtn Chitralekha Ghosh, DRCC Rtn Bimal Pal and many other presidents and members from other Rotary Clubs. Mostly all Rotarian guests spoke about how they were happy to see the event happening and also how they were enjoying themselves among the very enthusiastic Rotaractors who organised the show to perfection.

The event started with the welcoming of guests and an inaugural dance performance followed by some song performances. Among the events that followed were some recitation of poems of Tagore, dance, songs, a beautiful fashion show and a wit-play. All the events involved the Rotaractors who did a wonderful job. In between the events were few mementos handed over to past and senior Rotaractors who were acknowledged for their immense contribution to the Rotaract movement. Past DRR Avirup Guha Roy was also present in the event to boost the moral of the present Rotaractors. Rotaractors from almost all the clubs participated in the events which were hugely appreciated, but, everyone was bowled out by a song performance by Rtn Angshuman Bandopadhyay DG (2011-12) who without any preparation, on demand went on singing a beautiful Bengali song. Also the much appreciated event was the Bengali fashion show were the Rotaractors simply rocked. The play ‘Kipte Haradhan’ was also appreciated.

In between the events was also the prize distribution of Rock Career 2 which was held in the month of September. This three-hour event was in a complete Bengali atmosphere and everything happening was related to the Bengali culture.

The event was a huge success with more than 100 people attending it. The experience of 17 Rotaract Clubs working together was simply amazing and everyone wished, as well as hoped for similar projects and events in future. The event was followed by a fellowship.

A Quality time with the Children at Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital

Our Club members visited the critically ill, Children’s ward in Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital, today at around 10am, to share some quality time with them.

We started by distributing fruits, biscuits and some logistics to the children there, stricken by the nemesis called cancer, from such an early age. We also interacted with them and they enjoyed our company a lot.

Speaking to them, we came to know about their likings, disliking, their school and friends. Almost all of them were students of up to Class V. They were here from different parts of West Bengal, as well as Bangladesh.

In all it was a quality time with the children and we hope that we succeeded in our attempt to bring a smile to their innocent faces and make them feel that “yes, we care”, and that they are not alone. After spending around an hour with them we wished for their quick recovery and left, but not before saying a good-bye and a promise to meet again.

Health Seminar to Mark World Health Day

Today, our Club organised a seminar on health (Junk Food) at Chetla boys school from 6pm onwards to Mark World Health Day (7-04-09)

Rtn. Dr. Siddharth Chakraborty- Head Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Dept, Calcutta Medical College was the guest speaker at the seminar, who talked to the audience on valuable information regarding the positives and negatives of junk food. He was eloquent in his style of presentation which the audience enjoyed to the fullest as they were enlightened on modern day health hazards.

Rtr Shuvranshu hosted the event. Dr.S.Chakraborty was presented with a small memento along with Rtn Jayanta Mitra – Principal, Chetla Boys School at the end of the event.

To sum up the event vote of thanks was given to Dr.S.Chakraborty, Rtn. Jayanta Mitra, Rotarians present along with the others present and all who helped us in this event.

Celebrating Rotaract birthday

Today we celebrated Rotaract’s Birthday at our meeting venue. Though the birthday was on 13th of March, we felt that it will be convenient for all the members to join this special ceremony as it is a Sunday.
Our club President along with all the members did the cake cutting ceremony. Of course after that beverage, cakes, chips, sweets and other snacks did the rounds.
This special occasion was also joined by Rtn. Siddhartha Chakroborty, Youth Service Director and also Rtn. Sujoy Krishna Bhadra of our parent club, Rotary Club of Behala.

We had a good time having snacks and soft drinks at Cafe Coffee Day as Rtn Banerjee shared with us his valuable experience of Rotary and also his personal experience of life. He also gave us tips for a brighter future.

Visit to Cancer Hospital

On 10th of March, 2009, rotaractors of Behala visited Thakurpukur Cancer hospital from 10:30 am onwards.
The members reached the hospital where, we visited the children’s ward. We distributed drawing sheets along with crayons, fancy caps, fancy whistles and fruits to the children, admitted out there. But most importantly we managed to spend some quality time with the kids and were successful enough to bring smile to there faces. We even visited the critical ward for children where we met 3 critically ill children suffering from cancer.
We spend around an hour in the hospital before saying good-bye to the small kids suffering from the nemesis of cancer from such an early age.
We were also joined by Rtn Dr. Dipankar Banerjee, DG (2011-12) of R.I.D 3240 who took active participation in our project and also did appreciate our good work.
The drawing sheets used by us were sponsored by our parent rotary, Rotary club of Behala.
In all it was a satisfying project and we hope and wish to visit and do more projects out there.

Meeting Rotaractors From Punjab

Today, our Club members met few Rotaractors from Punjab, RID 3070, who were in Kolkata for few hours, while returning to their home-state from the Bangladesh ROTASIA.

The Rotaractors were from Rotaract Clubs of Phagwara Central, Jalandhar and Lohia Khas Greater. They reached Kolkata at around 3pm in the afternoon and met the members of our club.

Our club members took them for shopping to New Market from where they spent some time venturing into a variety of stores. Due to shortage of time, we were unable to take them for a sight-seeing, which they promised to fulfil the next time they come to Kolkata.

We exchanged greetings amongst each other. Our Club also presented them with mementos, our official club bulletins and pens. PDRR Rtr Rajan Rai also presented us with their District Directory and pens.

DRR-Elect, Rtr Amit Kumar even presented us with badges, with their district themes. Together we had some snacks and soft drinks and exchanged greetings and photos, before our club members bid them a hearty good-bye in Howrah station.

Felicitation and fellowship on Women's Day

Our Club celebrated ‘International Women’s Day’ today by felicitating of female members of the club, followed by fellowship at Rtr George’s residence.

This was a special celebration signifying and recognise the woman power and its importance in our lives, and our Rotaract Club where they have worked extremely hard to make RC Behala what it is today.

The ceremony began with a short speech on ‘woman in this world’, and wishing them ‘their’ day, by Rtr George. Then we felicitated the members one by one as mementos were handed over by the male members of the club to the female members.

After felicitation was over the female members thanked us all and felt proud to be a members of Rotaract club of Behala.

Thereafter food took centre-stage as Rtr Shuvranshu laid down a variety of items. All the members were happy to ponder upon such nice and delicious food.

In between we had different performances from Rtr Mousumi, Rtr Aditi, Rtr Shireen, Rtr George, Rtr Soumojit and Rtr Saheli. And played games like passing the pillow and dumb charade.

Off to Trip RID 3240

Rotaract Club of Behala toured RID 3240 from 8th February to 15th february, 2009. The whole trip was initiated by Rtr Shuvratav Mitra, the International Service Director of our club.

DAY ONE- 8TH, FEBRUARY, 2009 : AT 11:30am we left from Behala and Rashbehari for Howrah Station to catch the ‘Saraighat Express’, which will take us all the way to Guwahati, our destination, or you may call our ‘base camp’ for the trip. The train was on time, leaving at 4:00pm, and was waiting for us on platform no.8. Five seats were ready. Luggage’s were placed were they should have been and food included all what we could take for a train journey such as cakes, cold drinks, biscuits, chips etc.

DAY TWO- 9TH, FEBRUARY, 2009: At 10:10am the train chugged into the Guwahati Station. There were persons who came to receive us. A Bolero was standing for us to take us to our president’s uncle’s house. As we came out of the platform it felt as if the city was ready to receive us with open arms. We went to Rtr Saheli’s uncle’s house, took a warm bath, lunched was served and the clock struck 12:30pm. It was time to leave for the World Heritage Site ‘Kaziranga National Park’.

The car was waiting to take us to our destination. After a 217km long drive we finally reached Kaziranga. At 6:00pm we checked in at Dhanshiri Resort. Munching on chowmein and drinking coffee made us relax a bit after making a five and a half hours journey. Next was the visiting of 7th, Kaziranga Elephant Festival, it was cold and when we entered the festival grounds. It was great to be there and look on stuffs that were rare to us in Kolkata.

DAY THREE- 10TH, FEBRUARY, 2009: Alarm at six in the morning, it’s the wake time guys, breakfast served and it’s the high time because we are going for the jungle safari. We had to take gypsy, since elephants were restricted from hiring because of the on going elephant festival. On our way to the forest entrance we were lucky enough to get a glimpse of the elephants that were being taken for decoration for the morning procession. By 8am we were inside the Park.

WOW! At the very start we got a full view of the ‘Great Indian rhinoceros’ or commonly know as the ‘One Horned Rhino’. On our way we saw deer, wild elephants, different kinds of birds, bison etc. While we were on our way to the watch tower to our greatest delight a rhino was about to cross the motor road right in front of us. As the rhino came a bit too close, it hesitated to cross and started grazing on the grasses. At the Watch tower we were treated to a bird eye view of the forest.

Soon it was time for us to leave from Kaziranga. At around 12:30pm we segregated into two teams. Team one consists of Rtr Shuvratav and Rtr Shuvranshu while team two comprises of Rtr Souvik, Rtr Subhasis, Rtr Saheli. Team one left for Guwahati from there to Jowai and team two left for Dibrugarh.

They bid farewell from each other for a certain period of time. A car took Team One back to Guwahati while a bus took Team Two to Dibrugarh.

DAY FOUR- 11TH, FEBRUARY, 2009: TEAM ONE - It was 5:00am we got up for our hectic and exciting journey to Jowai. Our car was ready to take us to Shillong about 127km from Guwahati. What’s the scenic beauty we were bewilder, so its 11:05 and we standing in front of the civil hospital were Rtr Lam and Rtr Georgy met us. We went to a restaurant and had lunch, before leaving for Jowai, which was 63km from there. Through the roads running up and down the hills we reached Sajar Nangi Lake. The whole Rotaract Club of Jowai was ready to welcome us at this historic lake which was dug by the tip of their battle bows during the 16th century. The warm welcome from them made us feel like home. A little bit of boating and we are off for the lunch at Orchid Inn. A car was ready for us to take us to Tyrshi Falls. After rattling down around 450 staircases we finally reached the bottom of the falls. It was beginning to dark when we entered the small hilly town of Jowai. We made our way through the city to reach Kiang Nangbah Memorial Monument. Kiang Nangbah was the first person to revolt against the British in Jowai, later he was hanged in the market area. Five minutes from the monument was the ‘Hanging Bridge’, over the river called the Golden Flower, which surrounds the Jowai Hill.

At around 6pm we attended the meeting of the club there. The meeting started with members pinning flowers, presenting us with traditional ‘Khasi Sovenir’, models of ‘Monolythis’. They also presented us their ‘Official Bulletin’ and last but not the least their ‘Club Exchange Banner’. In return we also presented them a ‘Memento’, our club ‘Bulletins’. We inaugurated our official ‘Club Pens’ bearing our club name. We gave all the members the pens. Rtr Shuvratav gave a brief speech by thanking them for their warm regards and excellent reception. Finally they thanked us going all the away from Kolkata and visit them. The meeting ended, and we left for dinner. The dinner was a huge arrangement made by them, but it was really delicious and tasty. Rtr Wanbor played and sung for with Rtr Shuvratav joining for songs. Rotaract club of Jowai members were looking after everything to make comfortable.

TEAM TWO – After breakfast and we are off to the Bhramhaputra River Side. It was a very pleasant sunny morning and the river looked really wonderful but some portions of the river, which was dry. We went to the see the ‘Medical College’ which is situated over an area of 2.5km. ‘Jalan Tea Estate’ was our next destination; we went inside and walked through the tea gardens. Thereafter, we visited a park constructed by Rotary Club of Dibrugarh in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. The next hours went meandering through the city streets, to the market area, to get a real taste of an Assam city. At around 9:30pm we took the Volvo Super Deluxe Bus for Guwahati.

DAY FIVE- 12TH, FEBRUARY, 2009: TEAM ONE- We are ready to leave for Shillong as we bid a warm farewell to Rotaract Club of Jowai for their tremendous arrangements. We reached Shillong at 11:00am and waited for Rtr Souvik and Rtr Subhasis to join us for a Shillong side seeing.

TEAM TWO - Reached Guwahati at around 7.30am and left for Shillong to meet Rtr Shuvratav and Rtr Shuvranshu.

Team one and team two finally meet around 11:30am. Our journey began with the Wards Lake. It was a beautiful lake with greenery all around. “Elephant Falls”, was our second destination. It is the best falls in Shillong and surrounded with mountains. ‘Air-Force Museum’, was the third destination. It contained many replicas and real size fighter planes. ‘Shillong Peak’, as destination four, was the highest point of Shillong, from where one could see the entire city. ‘Bishop-Biddon Falls’, our destination five, situated in a high mountain was a twin-fall. ‘IIM- Shillong’, as destination six, was one of the few IIM’s that is situated in a mountain.

Then, we left for Guwahati. On our way back was ‘Burra Pani Lake’, as our destination seven. It was a huge lake located on the gorge of many mountains. We were trying our level best to reach Guwahati as early as possible, because we were the special invitees for the ‘Inaugural Ceremony Of Rotaract Club of Guwahati West’.

Finally we were in time to get freshened up for the ceremony. When we entered we were greeted with warm regards. Next we introduced ourselves to the Rotarians and Rotaractors present. Our President was called up for some inspirational speech, later she was presented with ‘Assamese Gamcha’ or traditional piece of cloth. In return she presented the Rotary and Rotaract Presidents with mementos, our official bulletins. Our Secretary also gave a brief speech and presented the Rotaractors our official club pens. IPDG (RID 3240) Rtn Prabhat K. Kedia and DG (2011-2012) (RID 3240) Rtn Dipankar Banerjee appreciated our presence, and was overwhelmed to see our official bulletin. All the persons present appreciated our effort and hard work. Later that evening they arranged a car for us to reach home safely. Rtn Dipankar Banerjee also invited us to his residence on the 13th, February, 2009.

DAY SIX- 13TH, FEBRUARY, 2009: Last but not the least we are in Guwahati and ready to study the city. Early in the morning we went to the ‘Kamakhya Temple’, one of the most recognised temples of India. Situated on top of a mountain, the temple is beautiful. We were greeted by our panda; we did all the rituals before entering the main temple doom. We stood on the V.I.P line to enter, inside it was awesome as we offered prayers. We gave puja and took the prasad. Next we went to the ‘Assam State Zoo And Botanical Garden’. It was great to be inside and totally different from the Kolkata zoo. President and Secretary, Rotaract club of Guwahati West joined us to guide us through the city. We went to State Art Gallary, Assam State Museum, Digli Pukuri Lake, Cotton College and Nepali Temple. We also went to the Assam Secretariat in Dispur, the capital city of Assam.

At 7pm when we went to DG (2011-2012) Rtn Dipankar Banerjee residence. He and his wife were wonderful persons and greeted as with open arms. We chatted on different topics; he was an encyclopaedia of knowledge. We both shared our cultures and he shared some of his real life experiences. Its time for us to go, with nice brief speech and warm hand shakes we bid farewell to each other. It was our privilege to spend time with such a wonderful person.

DAY SEVEN- 14TH, FEBRUARY, 2009: The D-DAY, we mean the day had come for us to leave for Kolkata. We went to the Guwahati station to catch the Saraighat Express. Rotarians and Rotaractors of RID 3240 were kind enough to say “come again and safe journey”. The train left the station at around 12:45pm that day as we all felt sad but faced it as we are going back to our home, RID 3291.

DAY EIGHT- 15TH, FEBRUARY, 2009: The clock struck 5:20am, when we reached Howrah, we took a cab and went off to our respected homes.

Through the trip DRR (RID 3240) Rtr Saurav Bajoria helped a lot in every possible way. So was Rtr Mewot, Secretary, Rotaract club of Jowai, DRR (E)(RID3240) Rtr Vijay Sharma. We are grateful to them for helping us fulfil our dream of visiting RID 3240.

Celebrating Valentine's Day with The Aged

14th February is the day of love. We spend this special day in a very special way. We exchanged our love with 39 inmates of SHANTINIVAS (an old-age home) at Oxford Mission, Behala Chowrasta. We reached there at 10 a.m. Rotaract Club of Calcutta also joined us. We were a team of 14 Rotaractors.

Each inmate of the house was greeted by us with a red rose, which were reciprocated with a big smile. A day cannot be a special day without a cake. Keeping that in mind all assembled there to piece a cake brought by Rtr. Soumojit. The cake was served to all present followed by dhokla, mixture and chips. Soon the surrounding was reverberated with songs by Rtr. Soumojit of R.C. Behala and Rtr. Ritesh of R.C. Calcutta, who made us all, felt their creative presence. This was followed by a dance performance by Rtr. Aditi, Rtr. Shirin and Rtr. Mousumi of our club. It was the golden moment of the programme, when all present participated in the Antakshari with all enthusiasm. And that is how the Valentines Day was celebrated with a difference.

At 12:30 we bid them good bye. All of us were very happy and satisfied after this wonderful celebration.

Observing Martyrs Day

Today, our Club observed ‘Martyrs Day’ at Chetla Boys School in Chetla from 11:30am onwards.

The program started with an opening song by the teachers of the school. We all gave flower garland to the picture of Mahatma Gandhi and a stand dedicated to the martyrs.

Our club members, with all the teaching staff of the school, the students and the guardians who were present showed their gratitude and concern for the persons who gave their lives for our freedom.

This was followed by a long line of recitations and song presentations from members of our club, students and teachers of the school.

Principal Rtn Jayanta Mitra enlightened us with the fact that it was today, 3oth, January, in 1948 that Mahatma Gandhi died on, the reason why this day is called the Martyrs Day. He also spoke about our club and informed why we had come to observe the day, eventually thanking us all for our concern for the ‘martyrs’ in our society.

A vote of thanks was given to all by Rtr Mousumi Mondal and there was silence for about 1 minutes in memoriam and after that our members, along with the teachers and students and all present joined together to sing the national anthem.

Fun and Fellowship for Club Members

Today our Club members joined Rtr Shuvranshu at his residence from 5 pm for a fellowship.

It was a evening off from the busy and hectic schedule in life. And all of us had a blast.

There was a variety of snacks which we enjoyed a lot, followed by some games amongst the members with the winners taking home CDs of famous Bollywood films.

Some songs and recitations were also a part of the fun filled evening, with Rtr Mousumi Mondal taking the better of other members in this department.

But sadly time was not on our side as it seemed to be running out and by 8pm it had to come to an end with members leaving for their residences, but not before some hugs and good wishes.

Republic Day Celebration at an Old Age Home

Today, 22 Rotaractors from 8 different clubs joined together to observe Republic Day at Kalyan Asharam, an old age home in Chetla from 10am onwards.

‘Kalyan Asharam’ is the first Help Age India Old Age home that started in July, 2008. Currently there are 9(nine) residents in the ashram which is a free home for elderly ladies.

The program started with hoisting the ‘Indian Tri Colour’, saluting her with flowers, and singing the national anthem.

Rtr Shuvranshu introduced the visiting Rotaractors who were present as Rtr Ritesh (who took a music system with him) played patriotic background scores. Soumi Roy Choudhury (Sr. Ex MMU) gave a brief explanation to us about their mission and objective for running such a wonderful home for the elderly.

We all sang songs significant to the day. Rtr Mousumi recited two wonderful poems, Rtr Ritesh sang a song, and there were wonderful songs even sung by the elderly residents of the home. In fact, our grandmothers are prefect when it comes to singing and recitation and we realised that there is so much to share and learn from them.

Then to sum up the whole program we distributed food among the grandmothers which included home made sandwiches, dhokla’s and sweets. There was food from their side. But the program was not over yet the grandmothers started chatting with us.

How time flew was unbelievable. Then they all took us to their rooms which was as perfect as they were, the whole floor was so well arranged that we were surprised by the neatness and caring of the staff for the old age people. The home felt like our own homes.

Lastly around 1.30 pm it was time to bid good bye but our hearts were not allowing us to leave as a short visit had made us so much attached to them, we realised that these small visit can have a great impact for human values.

Distributing Bed Rolls

Today, our club, along with our sponsoring Rotary (Rotary Club of Behala) jointly with Rotary Club of Dum Dum, distributed bed rolls to the under-privileged children, aging from 6years to 11years.

The program started at 9 in the morning at the Calcutta Blind School field. Children were given bed rolls and along with, a bag consisting of dresses, books, footwear, stationery’s etc. They were also given food packets.

Our Club had organized a bus for the children that picked them up from a particular destination and after the program also dropped them from where they were picked up.

Lunch on National Youth Day

We did a stomach-full of club service today by having lunch at ‘Hatari’ restaurant in the afternoon to mark the National Youth Day that was on January 12.

We had a appetizing spread from parathas and paneers to chicken and lamb. It was a delicious club gathering and interaction on a very joyful and light mood.

This was the first time in this new year that our club members came together for a lunch. We were also joined in by members from Rotaract Club of Jowai, Meghalaya (RID 3240).

After the lunch we exchanged our views and ideas with the guests and were happy to interact with each other.

An effort to sow the seeds of India's progress

Farming is the most widely practised occupation in India comprising of approximately 70 % of the land in India. We are one of the strongest countries in terms of cultivated crops and are a self sufficient country providing food for more than 100, 00, 00,000 (one hundred crore) residents. In fact, the persons who have helped India achieve this phenomenal pride are its farmers. So, our Club decided to reach out to them and celebrate the day that’s specially designated and crafted for them.

Today, went to Nalgora to distribute seeds of different vegetables to mark the ‘KISAN DIWAS’ or ‘NATIONAL FARMERS DAY’ which is on the 23rd, December, 08.

Rotaractors left for Nalgora in the morning, led by our President Rtr Saheli Dutta herself. We reached there to a very affectionate welcome. We went to Nalgora Ramakrishna Sevasaram where a small cultural program was conducted by the school run by the organisation.

We took seeds of different vegetables with us for distribution to the farmers. There were a total of six different kinds of seeds. Like, Ladies finger, Beans, Coriander leaves, Spinach beet (Palang sag), Cowpea and Bottle gourd.

The seeds were handed over by our president to the members of the organisation for distribution among the farmers. The members were happy to get a helping hand from us towards farming. We also told them about the big day for them on the 23rd, December, 08.

Finally it was done, our members thanked and appreciated our president Rtr Saheli for conceiving the idea, and taking the pain in collecting the valued seeds and making the project a success, taking into account the significance of the day and purpose. Rotarians of behala also appreciated her effort and sincerity.

Medical check-up camp for villagers

Today, our Club, in association with Rotary Club of Behala organised a free medical health check-up camp for adults and child, at RCC Nalgora.When we reached there, we were welcomed with flowers, sweets, and coconut water.

Then we all sang the national anthem followed by a dance and song performance by the students of the school. The doctors took their respective rooms for the check-up to move on swiftly and smoothly.The camp started with registrations of child and adults at 12:10pm done by our club members.There were seven doctors and three blood testing experts. The camp included tests like Blood sugar test, Blood grouping, General health(child), General health(adults), Eye testing, and so on.There were more than 110 patients, who came from different villages to get themselves checked.

There was also a polio booth. Our members took the responsibility in helping and guiding the patients to their respective rooms for the check-up.While the camp was on a flow we distributed necessary stationeries including pencils, erasers, sharpeners, pencil boxes, rulers, and sets of writing copies, biscuits and toffees to the students of the school. The effort was followed by a delicious lunch.

Sports for the Disabled

Our Club today organized sports for the special children’s of “MENTAID” at KFR Field (beside Mohonananda Bramhachari Sishu Seva Pratisthan) from 10:00am onwards.

The sports started in time with events like 100m, 50m, relay etc. The students enjoyed a lot and specially the students who won medals. It was followed by events which included the parents of the students, faculty and staffs of MENTAID.

Finally the sports were summed-up by food packets and Frooti given to the students. The sports also marked the World Disabled Day which was on the December 3.

DRR 3240 in Kolkata

Today, we met the District Rotaract Representative of District 3240 Rtr. Saurav Bajoria. He was kind enough to take out some important time for us from his busy schedule and met us at Swabhumi.

We presented him our Club Bulletin and also gave him the reports of the projects done by our club from July 2008 to November 2008. He also gave us the Rotaract District Directory of RI District 3240 and also his banner.

Seminar on Aids and Thalassamia

Today, we organized a seminar cum awareness camp on ‘HIV-AIDS and Thalassaemia’ at Sarsuna College campus, Calcutta from 11:30am onwards to mark the ‘WORLD AIDS DAY’. Our members distributed AIDS badges and leaflets to the audience. There were tea and biscuit arrangements for all present in the seminar.

The seminar included Dr. Pranab Kr. Roy (principal Sarsuna College), Dr. Animesh Roy, chief guest (Department Of Medicine, Calcutta Medical College), Rtr Saheli Dutta (our Club President) and Mr. Souvik Roy (HOD micro-biology department). The speakers and guest of honor included Dr. Arindam Pandey, (MD, PGT, department of medicine Calcutta Medical College), Dr. Sujata Basu (Senior Divisional Medical Officer, Eastern Railway) and Dr. Prantar Chakraborty (Assistance Professor, Institute of Hematology And Transfusion, Calcutta Medical College).

The seminar began with a minutes silence for those who died in the Mumbai attacked and those who died of HIV-AIDS. This was followed by welcome speeches from our guest before the doctors took over to talk on the subject of discussion. Dr. Arindam Pandey enlightened us on ‘HIV-AIDS and its harmful effects, causes and more’ followed by presentations from 2nd year micro-biology students. Dr. Sujata Basu talked on ‘HIV-AIDS and its preventions, measures, health centre’s, etc’, while Dr. Prantar Chakraborty took up the last session on ‘thalassaemia’ and explained every aspects of it.

There were open question answer rounds in between the deliberations that clarified every doubt of the audience.

The whole event was a huge success in its own way and our club offers special thanks to Rtn Dr Siddhartha Chakraborty for his enormous help and support

Dinner with Rtr Isil Boyaci from Turkey

On 1st, December, 08 Rotaract Club of Behala hosted a dinner in honour of Rtr Isil from Izmir, turkey R.I.D 2440. The dinner was arranged in “SONAMATI RESTURANT” at behala from 8:00pm onwards. The host of the evening was Rtr Saheli Dutta, President (08-09), Rotaract Club of Behala. It was a very delicious and well organized dinner. The whole arrangement was made by Rtr Debrup and Rtr Paramita. The food included soups, chicken, fish to ice-creams and cold drinks. Rtr Isil was very much in the mood in sharing, laughing, and enjoying with us.

A statue, a card, a taj mahal replica etc were the gifts given to her from our club; in return she gave us nice presents. After the sumptuous dinner Rtr Saheli Dutta gave our club badge to her. Last but not the least we took snaps and we hugged each other to say good bye………………

Welcoming Rtr. Isil from Turkey

Our club of and Rotaract Club of Calcutta organized a welcoming ceremony for Rtr Isil from Izmir Turkey (R.I.D 2440) at Rotary Sadan.

Rtr Isil did a presentation on her country and her Rotaract Club. In return Rtr Shuvratav did a presentation on Rotaract Club of Behala highlighting our current projects.

Rtr Isil was overwhelmed to hear about our club’s projects. We joined her for snacks and exchanged further information.

Our project report, a movie on Rotaract Club of Behala, our bulletin was presented to her along with a beautiful memento. She invited all of us to turkey, and also gifted us the “Turkish eye”.

A Light of Remembrance

Today, our Club members paid tribute to the martyrs of the “Mumbai Terrorist Attack”.

We organized a tribute paying ceremony in front of Behala Police Station from 6:00pm.

It was a befitting tribute to the heroes who laid down their lives while fighting for the country against the terrorists. There were slogans, the national flag, candles, all put up to show our concern towards our country and its heroes.

“A tribute to our great heroes” was a writing made on the stage and that was lit up with more than 100 candles.

Passer-byes did make their concern felt by lighting candles with us and observing a minute of silence along with us.

The event was also attended by Rotarians, Ann’s, members of Inner Wheel Club of Behala, Rotaractors from Calcutta and Rtr Isil from Turkey (RID-2440).

Showtime for Kids on World Television Day

Our Club in association with NSS of Presidency College organized a movie show at the Derozio Hall in presidency campus for the under-privileged children on the occasion of WORLD TELEVISION DAY today.

We started with the screening of Charlie Chaplin’s Gold Rush followed by a Bengali film, Tapan Sinha’s Shriman Prithviraj.

During the interval we distributed food packets and chocolates to the kids.

The 50 kids who had come in for the show enjoyed a lot as the program that began at 12:30pm slowly put the curtains down at 5:30in the evening.

"Dostana" for Fellowship

For this we caught up at Asoka Theatre in Behala and went for the 5.15 show of the movie Dostana fearturing Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra.

Health Check-up camp for Mothers and Children

Members of our club, along with our sponsoring Rotary Club (of Behala) went to the RCC (of the Rotary Club), today morning at Rasapunja to organize a mother and child free-health check-up camp.

We went there with the ambulance of the Rotary Club and also senior doctors of Calcutta Medical College. At Rasapunja the doctors checked around 73 mothers and their children, advising them required medication.

The camp was concluded with the distribution of food packets.

Children's Day with Kids

Today, our club members celebrated Children’s Day with kids of AIWC School by visiting and spending time with them.

We distributed sweets, food, toys and stationary for drawing and writing among them. They were overjoyed on receiving their presents, and we were really happy to see them laugh and scream with happiness.

To show their response they sung the national anthem. They were very happy, as were we.

To sum up the whole event our club members along with Rotarians of Behala together said aloud “Happy Children’s day to all of you”… in return they gave a huge smiling expression.

Hear and Now

Today, our club members organized a Hearing-Check-Up camp at the Institute for the Handicapped.

The event started with ENT-SPECIALISTS checking the patients with hearing problems.

It was an event with patients coming from different institutes to get them checked with hearing problems.

Snacks were given to the patients. At the final checking it was suggested by the doctor exactly who needs hearing aids and every thing was told regarding their problems.

An Entertaining Bijoya-Diwali Meet

Today, 68 people including our club members enjoyed the evening to the fullest as the

Bijaya-Diwali get-together was a hit in its own way. The over all program went like a beautiful picture through every ones mind, as a memorable event.

The whole program was packed with entertaining performance by our club members, Rotaractors of other clubs, artists, and more.

The National anthem, led by our club members started on a traditional note. It was followed by song performance by Saupam Chakraborty and group. Rtr Shuvratav and his friend Daniel rocked with songs like “Yaaron dosti” etc. gasping the audience ask for once more!

Rtr Mousumi showed her dancing talent by performing a ‘rabindra nritya’. She was so good that even our club members shouted “once more”. Rtn Rita Das, President Rotary Club of Behala gave her speech and was overjoyed with our performance and organizational qualities.

Rtr Mousumi again took stage to exhibit yet another of her talents - recitation. Thereafter, Rtn Dr Siddhartha Chakraborty shared few jokes to make us laugh aloud.

Our Charter member past Rtr Mr. Amitava Dasgupta was the special invitee of the program. According to him the club has grown big and strong, a fact which made him feel extremely happy. Our club President Rtr Saheli Dutta, gave a token of love on behalf of the whole club.

On this Bijoya-Diwali get-together we had special guests from the oldage home ‘santi niwas’. They enjoyed a lot and even shared their expression with an emotionally charged speech.

To event finally folded with a fun game ‘passing the pillow’. There were participants like Rotarians, santi niwas members, our club members and Rotaractors from other clubs. It was and will be the most fun filled ‘passing the pillow’ one has ever seen. Prizes were given to Rtr Prem the winner, Rtr Anwesha (runners-up) and Rtr Sarajit (second runner-up). There were presents for the Rotarians and inmates of santi niwas. The vote of thanks was given by Rtr Soumojit Mukherjee and Rtr Shuvratav Mitra. The whole event was hosted by Rtr Debdatta Das.

Delicious foods in packets were given to all, present.
